Greetings,

Anyone have an idea or have the experience of using a brake to lower recoil?

I have access to the machinery to thread the barrel but I am wondering if there is really a brake that will tame the recoil effectively.

Anyone can point me a brake that really works?

Thank you
P.S.: The reason is that I have a bad shoulder and I want to lower the recoil of my rifle.

Before going to all that trouble maybe try the reduced recoil .30-06 ammo?

Greetings,

I reload my ammo and I use the lowest recoil. I even put a recoil pad on the rifle. This model is simply too light and my shoulder too damaged...

And no, I don't want to change rifle. I just want to find a way to tame the recoil if possible.:)

Thank you

If you can take the weight add weight to the stock.

If you measure the outside diameter of the muzzle (assuming it has no front sight, or at least enough free length to thread), then you can install one of the various muzzle brakes/ recoil reducers out there.

Although (some say) they look funny, and do direct the blast out to the sides to various degrees; the better ones do work.

My favorites have been:
JP Recoil eliminator (by far, though they look the silliest)
Smith Enterprise
Hollands Quick Discharge

Also, there are NON-threaded ones that installs with set screws but i don't know the inside diameter of the device. if the device ID and your barrel OD match, then this is one to try. ( 'set screw' or 'post-ban' model)

On the Ar-15 brakes, you will have to ream out the exit holes to .348 to allow unobstructed projectile travel. Its easier than you think- i've done it.

Finally, the legal hoops to get you posession of a legal suppressor (i.e. "silencer"- a misnomer) will allow reduced recoil AND reduced sound/blast. 30-cal rifle suppressors are expensive, though.

What does the OD of your barrel measure out to be?

Also, Adding one of these, if your stock will accept it, will help with "felt recoil' but not with 'actual' recoil. Know what i mean?

combine that with a squishy pad with a large surface area for your injured shoulder.

Why don't you just change the caliber? Barrel swapping is easy on a Savage rifle. If you are capable of threading for a brake, you are certainly capable of swapping barrels.

Here are a few options. Install a heavier barrel, easy to do with an action vise, go gauge and barrel wrench. Change it to 25-06, lighter bullet equals less recoil. Sabot rounds using a 55 grain bullet will reduce recoil. Install a brake as suggested above. My favorite is using a silencer. It will add weight and the baffles act as a brake.

If you have access to a lathe then it is easy to make an effective silencer. I make them as a hobby. They are legal in GA, but you still have to pay the $200 tax to the ATF first. While the silencer will do nothing for bullet noise, if you are shooting out in the open, chances are a good silencer will make it safe to shoot without ear plugs. A silencer does wonders for my 308 savage. Check out http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertalk.com for more info.

If the problem is your shoulder and not your neck, it may be a simple as shooting lefty.

I have a muzzle brake on my savage 110 30-06. I also changed the original pad and put a limbsaver. Feels like I am shooting a 243. The rifle is twice as loud now, which sucks .

I'd first try changing the butt pad and getting a shoulder pad, cheaper and easier.
