Today the Virginian Pilot has a great story of a woman, a first time shooter, with a new Glock .40 who had occasion to defend herself and sons from a guy who shot at her in her driveway (and missed). She fired some five times and hit and stopped him. He was caught by police later in the van his buddy was driving.

The problem with posting the story text is that the paper requires registration and a fee unless you are a paper (hard copy ) subscriber. Posting the URL won't help most readers. However, as a subscriber I am allowed to email the story to whomever I choose.

This is a story I'd like to post, but to cut and paste it puts me, I believe, in a bind re legality... it, no doubt, is considered copyrighted.

Tell me that I can email it into a thread post.

Yeah! I know - technology hasn't gotten that far, right? Maybe the folks at vBulletin can shove this into the next version. Oleg??

Another well-known conservative board (FreeRepublic) has rules about stories from certain newspapers--but there's wiggle room.

Email the story to yourself, then copy/paste the first graph-and-a-half onto the board. Follow with the URL of the story and if someone REALLY wants to read it, they can.

Indicate CLEARLY that the story is a partial (use <snip>, </snip>) or some such language.

Copyrights are valid, but so is "fair use."

Good advice. A snippet and a link is the way to go. If the link requires a logon and/or a fee, it is up to the reader to continue or not.

Please do not cut/paste entire copyrighted articles here. That's not directed to you, Ironbarr, since you obviously understand the legalities, but rather to the general membership.

They have it locked in an image file. I've tried to extract it through various ways with my software - but no joy.

I went to http://www.hamptonroads.com, clicked on ePilot - but even reading the article on-line requires joining... so no go.

What I can do is to post my para (1) above in General, and hope some locals will add to it. Does this appear useful?
