hey guys. im heading down to NC to visit some of the family and i got a new Sig p226 and my father in law wants to fire it pretty badly as i have customized it. i am wondering how i can legally transport it from NJ to NC. obviously ill lock it up and keep the ammo separate. any info would be greatly appreciated. ill also provide my permit that its registered with NJ State Police. ive read the NRA gun laws but i want to make EXTRA SURE im legally allowed to bring it with me. thanks!!

In North Carolina you can legally carry and transport openly, loaded of course. Like anywhere else, there are restrictions though.
If you can live in NJ with a handgun, you'll do fine in NC!

oh im not moving to NC im just heading down to spend a week with the family and to teach my father in law how to shoot. this is my first time transporting a HANDGUN across state lines for recreational purposes.

Once you hit VA nobody cares if you have a gun in your trunk. Just don't stop til then.

It won't help you now, but consider getting a Florida out of state permit. Once out of NJ and MD you can carry all you want.

NC the law is regarding open carry is that if the cop can see it, its open and legal. If you get pulled over the passenger seat or the dash board are legit. Just be sure it blatantly open and there is no issue.

It's true that it is legal to ship it to yourself through UPS or FedEx, but I think it violates UPS and FedEx policies (I'm more confident of the latter than the former). Although it might be tempting not to worry about these companies' policies, the law requires that you inform the carrier that it is a handgun.

What are you saying? In NJ it's legal to own a handgun but you can't transport it across the State line? ...Or transport it in a motor vehicle at all? I don't understand.

go to www.handgunlaw.us look at and print a page of each state that you will traveling through and keep it with you on your travels. If you get stopped, you will have and know the laws pertaining to the firearm.

In some states if stopped you MUST inform the officer of firearm. Others you don't. If you print these pages yo will know.

I suggest you get this book and read it so that you know what each state's laws are. What may be legal in one state may not in the next. What you don't know may cause problems.

Under the seat in an unlocked box can be construed as concealed carry in NC.


The law is vague and leaves a lot up to the police. The officers I have talked to say that if its locked up and can't be accessed it (no key in the lock) then its not concealed, regardless of where it is in the car. If it can be accessed then it needs to be in plain view. Putting the gun in a box, and placing the box on the seat next to you is still concealed. Either put it in the trunk, or carry it open on the seat next to you or on the dash.

No, it does not violate UPS' policies (although it might violate the counter person's personal policies [this is when you pull out your copy of their policies and call a manager]). UPS policy on firearms is to accept any legal shipment.

While in NJ, the gun can not be within your reach, even if locked up and in a locked glove box or console. It's the trunk or if you have an SUV, in the very rear of the vehicle.
