Blacktails

It is said that those that think Whitetails are smart have never hunted Blacktails. Having hunted both I would say that is generally true except during the rut. Blacktails get absolutely stupid.

Yesterday while out gathering up some escaped cows we kicked up a nice Blacktail buck that was so focused on a doe that I could literally walk right up to him. Once the cows were back where they belong I returned with my camera - I did not have permission to hunt this property.

He wasn't the only interested in the doe

This Doe was content browsing and napping while these other guys orbited her as if held by gravity.

Had she decided to visit my place this story might have another ending but she didn't and my neighbor - who has permission to hunt that property - put the 4x on the meat pole yesterday...

What you say about blacktails in the rut maybe true. That's probably why in California the only hunts during the rut are special hunts that you have to aquire points for over years.

I wish there was a late bow hunt for California, or make the bow season in Nov. instead of the 105 Aug weather.

That is a great buck. I miss hunting over there, although we have some nice mulies and whitetails here.
