What did you shoot last weekend?

This is about the time of year the competition forum dries up and blows away for the year as folks go hunting and/or go indoors because it's cold on their cute little toesies....
So anyway, last weekend it was beautiful at least in the SE and midatlantic. What did you compete in? How did you do? Did you learn something? Good things, bad things you did?
I shot a monthly USPSA match at Sir Walter Gun Club Creedmoor, NC. www.sirwaltergunclub.com. I was running my G34 in Production. I had hung production up for awhile but am now back hot and heavy. I won my class only because there were four folks there and only one was real competition. If this gets too tough I'll move to revolver where the competition is less fierce.
As for learning, I learned(maybe) to stick to me pre plan. Part A was okay, I planned to win my class. Part B was to use the day to practice visual patience and work on better hits as the self improvement objective. So anyway, hoseritis is a tough bug to kick.
As to bad, I missed three things I was aiming at and two that I ran right by and never saw in the walk through, while shooting, not until targets were being scored. Well with 2M 1 FTE it was still one of my better stages and in the top ten overall, I guess everyone blows up big courses.
As for good, I guess the classifier. 7th of 39 only one of the 8 dot guns beat me. Score will be too high for my class, will be disallowed. In other news my 25yd practice I do every range visit continues to pay off, I can pull up and drill far plates with confidence as a result, makes me so happy I can't possibly get bad hits on paper right....? See Hoseritis.
Next match is my home club the weekend before turkeyday unless I can hit some I Don't Practice Anymore in between. ;)

Shot in an IDPA indoor match... My G17 this time. It was fun and worth the time. Didn't do too bad in ESP. Though about 2 guns in one match, next time....

Didn't get to shoot. Plumbed the basement bathroom. I now have a flush toilet downstairs. :)
Not as fun as shooting of course.

Saturday:
1) I chronographed some .45 ACP out of my S&W 945 for Sunday's IDPA shoot. I learned I need more powder to make a 165 PF. Increased load by 0.3 grains and loaded 200 rounds.
2) I shot my TC Penn. Hunter for the 1st time in 7-10 years. I'm thinking about hunting with it this year. I learned I need a lot more work before muzzleloader season opens.
Sunday:
1) I drove 143 miles (one way) to shoot IDPA in Maine. We shot in a cold intermittent rain, but had a good time. I learned I need to bring rain gear and a hat to shoots. I also learned I really need to work on shooting from cover.
Respectfully,

I didn't shoot a match, but I did test fire a new (to me) custom Clint Fowler pre-ban M1A. Double lugged, McMillan stock and barrel, welded gas system, lapped sights, tuned trigger, EVERYTHING. Shot a 94 on a 10 shot string on a 600 yard target...I really don't feel comfortable with the rifle yet, so I'm sure it will shoot better.

IDPA Saturday at Prado in Chino, CA, also the classifier afterwards - FINALLY made Marksman :D beating last month's score by 30 points (even with two procedurals; I have a hard time NOT double tapping targets. :uhoh:  )
No shooting Sunday - finally got the security screen doors installed. Don't need the security so much but the dogs won't be able to push/claw/chew their way through these :scrutiny:
And Steel Madness at Raahauge's in Norco CA was cancelled so's the SASS dudes could show off their duds (and shoot, too, I guess, but I remain convinced the outfits are the real reason for Cowboy Action. :D )
Sorry, just sour grapes - Cowboy would probably be a blast but I can't afford all the new guns (OR the clothes :neener: )

Folks in Arizona and SoCal that can shoot 4 matches a week really annoy me. ;) Mebbe I should move to Az.
Steve, what's up with the M-1A, I thought everyone serious had stopped competing with them? You just want to be different? Sounds good since that's the only gun I have to start HP with.

While everyone else is going forwards, I am going backwards. My focus in 2004 is to become a Distinguished Rifleman and possibly pick up my High Master card, both with the AR. Once I do those two things, I will "regress" to the M1A and "do it again" in my head. IOW, I want to beat the non-distinguished leg winners with an M1A (I won't take their points because I'll be Distinguished) and I want to average at least a Master score, if not a High Master score. I can shoot Master scores now with an M1A, but I would probably not be completely consistent. I'd like to get that up to High Master.
All part of being a rifleman.

I won my class only because there were four folks there and only one was real competition. If this gets too tough I'll move to revolver where the competition is less fierce.
So are you saying you and one other guy are sandbaggers and revolver shooters suck?
Navy joe
November 5, 2003, 06:11 PM
Ankeny,
:D No, you got to have talent to sandbag. I'm just saying that there is one guy who used to wax me regularly in Lim-10 when I started and now it's payback time. We're both C class and in my case the classifiers haven't caught up to me yet, prolly because I tried to shoot M class times on a few, resulting in...complete blow-ups. I shot one classifier match and grenaded every classifier there. One still came back as 60% with a miss on it so I know I was going way too fast. The other guys were D class.
The revolver thing was a joke, I want to shoot the class but the lack of competition is a turn-off. Same guy always wins first and last. Without a good shooter around it is hard for me to improve. Still, the 625 at the local shop calls... Somebody come shoot revolver with me! Heck I started looking for ICORE clubs and there are none near me.
Steve, sounds cool. I'm sure you'll prove it's all Indian and no arrow to being successful. I look forward to seeing your pet loads so I can shamelessly duplicate.

Navy joe:
I posted tongue in cheek. I knew what you meant. My post was supposed to be humorous, but the Internet is so freaking literal, lol. As for your observation about revolvers, I couldn't agree more. I shot a revolver regularly last summer and I do pretty well. The lack of interest in the division makes it almost impossible for me to get fired up over the wheelgun. That's a shame too because revolver is the division that I shoot the best.

IDPA Saturday at Prado in Chino, CA, also the classifier afterwards - FINALLY made Marksman
Congrats. Feels good to nail a good score. Work has kept me away from the range hope to get in some shooting before year end. I only know of one IDPA classifier being held in San Diego thru year end and hope to make it (American Shooting Center).

Richard - you should try to make it to Prado. We have a classifier in the afternoon EVERY 1st Saturday after the match. And the matches are a blast: EIGHT stages every 1st and 3rd Saturday, and they'll be bringing back the 2 stage shotgun side matches in January.
Oh, and there'll be a Low Light/ No Light night match on 11/22; signups at 4:30PM.

I shot at http://www.midtnshooters.com/ IDPA, they just got a new range. Was a blast. They had the first shotgun-pistol side match and I learned I like shotgun side matchs.
Picked up a couple -3's on some longer shots and came in 2nd again. Somebody not anyone here made all the shots long:banghead:
But I redeemed myself and had a smooth run on the side match and came out on top.

Is Prado a membership opportunity type of range? I logged onto the site but didn't notice any membership stuff.
Next Sat should be a go 11/15 I'm out of town until Friday night but I might just meet you out there then.
I plan on doing the 4 day Defensive Pistol course at Front Sight and read your post regrding the training. I might just squeeze this in mid-December if they have room in the course. First I need to move a business appointment to make room for it.

Ralph - Prado is unusual in that it's a publicly owned range - the City of Chino owns it though I believe the operation is a franchise. So, no memberships, all facilities are open to anyone.
One oddity this causes re: IDPA is that the "official" status of the matches is uncertain - as a public range, match organizers cannot require organizational membership to participate, so you don't have to be an IDPA member to shoot the match - though you do get a $2 discount if you are.
As far as I know, it's not an issue, but I think it does mean that they can't hold Official (regionals, championships, etc.) matches there.
PS - BTW, Ralph, any idea what's up with the scores from the Iron Sights matches? I keep checking the OSA-TNT web site but nothing from Sept (or Oct) has been posted yet.

Tara I asked bill about this last night and he said the scores were still sitting at his computer. Part of the delay is their website subscription ran out and they are in the process of converting to a new URL. It will be called www/oceansidepistolleague.com although it won't be active for another week or so. The other reason is Bill just hasn't gotten around to it, LOL.
The October scores aren't up either. Good group of shooters but motivation can be problematic.
I'll definately get out there soon. Action Pistol this Saturday, that's the Cowboy stuff or is it something else, like plate shooting?
tcdrennen
November 7, 2003, 02:23 PM
"Action Pistol" is a lot like USPSA, but with both steel plates and paper targets, and usually a shotgun and/or a combo pistol-shotgun (2 Gun) stage. No prizes except bragging rights, lots of fun, and good practice.
It's also reasonanbly priced (at West End, anyway) - $15 for non WEGC members, $10 for members.
Bring about 250 rounds of pistol ammo, 5 slugs and a box of 7 1/2 for the shottie (and someone (me) will loan you one if you need it) and enjoy! You may not use all that, but you could   :D

What time is this gig get underway? It's still a long shot but maybe I can make it tomorrow.
tcdrennen
November 7, 2003, 04:59 PM
Ralph - Starts at 9AM but there's walk throughs for the stages so shooting usually starts about 9:30; and if you get there a little late you can usually jump in a catch up.
I usually leave Tustin about 8:15 and am in plenty of time (using the 261/241 Toll Road-91-15.) Figure 35 - 40 minutes from Orange via 55-91-15 barring accidents in the canyon.

Went out and practiced my rifle shooting. Unfortunatly it was at a local square boring old hunter's ed range. So just sat at the bench and shot little groups. I did shoot a 6 inch, 200 yard group with my Vepr K. I know that ain't going to win any High Power awards or anything, but not bad for a 7.62x39 with iron sights. :)
Shooting groups from a bench is BORING. :) To think that for most shooters, that is all they do. They don't understand the fun of having a timer beep in your ear and having to go to mach speed.
So I went and shot my pistol. The range has a no rapid fire rule. Which they define as more than 1 shot a second. 1 shot a second! :D Rapid my butt. Also no drawing from the holster. I guess they have to play towards the lowest common denominator.
So I loaded up all of my magazines with 1 round each, and practiced slide lock reloads! :D That kept each shot more than 1 second apart.
If shooting a 3gun match is the shooting equivelent to a really nice meal in a fancy restaurant, then shooting at a regular range is like grabbing a bargin burger from McDonalds.

Quit shooting IPSC/IDPA matches a year or so ago. Too expensive, too far to drive. However, if pin shooting makes a comeback in my area I'm there.
Last weekend went out to the boonies with my cousin to pop off a few rounds. Got to shoot:
M1 Garand
Auto-Ordinance 1911A1
Colt LW Commander
Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag
S&W 686
Mossberg 500 12ga
Wards Western Field .22 bolt action
Rossi M62 copy
.270 M700 ADL
Never shot a Garand before. I think I need one. Not sure what I need it for, but I think I need one.

Shot an IDPA match with a shotgun side match. IDPA match went well, placed 3rd in SSP shooting a H&K USP 40. The SUV of handguns to say the least. The shotgun side match went better. My buddy was bragging about how great his Bennilli shotgun was and how fast it shoots. Well lets just say that my ol' Rem. 870 riot gun did us pump shotgunners proud. Beat my buddy and another guy that were both shooting Bennilli super shotguns. The crowd was cheering me on. When they asked me what kind of work I had done to my shotgun I told them it was in the same condition as when I bought it at a pawn shop........ for $250.00.:D My buddy eariler called my shotgun a old relic :neener: Goes to show you what a Rem 870 can do in the right hands.

I shot a CZ-75 SA with the Austin Lone Star Practical Pistol Club. It is IPSC style once a month. I missed 3rd place (out of 5 or 6 shooters) in the Limited 10 by less than a point. Well, I had to double shoot at a couple of steel and poppers on some stages...so that's that. Generally, I am slower but accurate. Almost always get compliments on 'nice groups'. Money and time make practice perfect. The best part, it was fun.
