How to dispose of "junk ammo?"

Just wondering, how do you guys dispose of junk ammo? By junk I mean cartridges with bullet setback, deformed cases, failed to fire on multiple strikes, etc? I ask because I have half a box of Hornadays that the cases have deformed to one side due to storage in a mag without being rotated. These rounds are ones I definitely do not feel comfortable firing in any of my guns for risk of the case splitting. What do you all do with your junk rounds?

Depends on the gun and deformation, if the case is intact and the bullets not set back a pistol carbine with a locked chamber might be a way to go. However if you're in doubt chuck them, a local range might have a duds box.

You could get a kinetic bullet puller and disassemble them.

With the price of bullets now days, I'd pull them and load them up later. (even if I didn't reload now)

take 'em to the range next time you go.

Just throw it in the garbage. If you don't want to do that then dig a hole in the back yard, dump the ammo in, and cover it up.

Given those two options, I'd toss them in the garbage. My first choice would be the dud bucket at the range if you don't reload and wish to salvage the bullets.

Give them to a reloader.

In some states, such as CT, you can give them to the state police to be burned.

I bury my corroded ammo in the back yard.

As you have only half a box of ammo to get rid of: 1.Ask at your local range or gunatorium if a reloader might want them. One or the other will have a way of disposing of bad ammo. 2. Pull the ammo yourself and toss what you don't need. The brass at the range where it will be recycled the bullets where they will do the most good.

The above is the best ansewer BUT if you dispose of them yourself , I'd soak them { the bases} in WD40 for a few days to "kill" the primers.

Safest way to dispose of old ammunition is to break it down to salvage useable components and recyclable metals.
For large quantities contact your local police department or fire marshall. Most urban fire departments will accept modest quantities of sporting ammunition without charge for safe disposal. Our county disposes fireworks, explosives and ammunition in a controlled burn facility at the fire & rescue academy.

I pull them apart with a kinetic bullet puller and salvage anything that's salvageable. The powder usually gets sprinkled on the lawn as fertalizer. If nothing else is good I throw the brass in the range bucket for recycle if I'm feeling specially environmental that day or in the trash if not.

According to the Box O' Truth (http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot39.htm) that doesn't actually work.

Kinetic bullet puller, burn the powder try to salvage the bullet (if it's a reload).
Had a friend that would just take his out back, step on them NOSE DOWN into the turf. Nothing corrodes like good old dirt and weather.

That could lead to some interesting times next spring if the winter front lifts them up so the primer is at lawnmower blade height..... :D

For entertainment purposes only;
Place deformed bullets in bucket doused with gasoline, torch it with a long stick. Dash away from the bucket real fast like and Wallah poor man fireworks!;)

^The what happens to ammo in an oven or fire was tested on "Mythbusters" using .44 Mags & .50 BMG. While not a good idea, it's not likely to kill you either as it's the case that goes flying while the much heavier bullet stays put.

Along with motor oil?
No, no, no.
I pour the used motor oil out along the fence line to control weeds.
Just kidding, of course. My used motor oil goes back to O'Reilly's for recycling.

Just my opinion on decision options:
1. give to a reloader
2. give to a dealer/range
3. give to police department
4. pull them yourself
5. bury them
I had a relative that discovered a live 20mm cartridge in his backyard. He tried to give it to me, but I suggested he turn it over to the police. Here, they will accept it and dispose of items at the foundry.

Garbage can... they won't be anymore dangerous than anything else in the land fill. If its just a hand full of rounds, I don't think it is worth your time to recycle them. Now if you have a case or two... different story

Anyone can drop ammo off at my Agency for destruction. We get quite a bit every year. When we get it enough the bomb guys take it out and blow it up.
It is a quick and easy process.

I pull the bullets and save them if possible, toss them if not (or I keep cast lead ones for when I finally start casting).
Save the powder until you have about two pounds of it. Then take it out in the yard and light up the midnight sky!
Save the brass for recycling.

As a reloader I will deprime the cases, full length resize them, and then reload them. In these days of hard, tight ammo do not simply toss them. If you don't want them find a reloader.

I pull them apart and toss the powder in the grass. It makes great fertilizer. The bullets and brass get reused. If the primer is suspect, I'll deprime in my single stage with goggles and gloves.
---------------------------caveat------------------------------------
I toss small quantities of powder in the grass. It degrades very quickly. If you toss a pound of powder in your brown weeds and start a grass fire. Don't claim I told you it was safe.
