CVA Electra

The first rifle I ever owned was a sidelock that I built from a kit so I can't believe I'm even considering a "modern" ML but does anyone have any experience with the Electra?

It does sound like an interesting concept and having a zero locktime would be nice. In addition, not having caps or primers means you can fire the rifle without ever having to buy anything (make your own BP and lead cast bullets).

It's not my thing at all, but kinda tacticool anyways.I would say very suvivalist,but how would you recharge the batteries? IF I were headed down that road,I think I would have to have 209 ignition.Of course,that's just me, YMMV. speaking of innovations,did you see the Pat. pending blank lock?

Please, READ the reviews in Cabelas before you buy! There seems to be some question as to legality of this firearm.

I didn't see any questions on the legality and it does not appear to be restricted in this state's hunting regulations. Just the same, I've emailed the DNR for clarification.

After looking at the Cabelas website, I should note that Natchez has them on sale, $300 for the black stock version.

That's odd. I'm looking at the Cabela's website right now and there are only 3 comment, all 5-star.

A few posts:

While I haven't shot one yet, I do have 2 friends that have them and they shoot very well for them. One of them is shooting 150gr of pellets with the 270 platnum Powerbelt and gets under 2" groups at 100 yards. Not the load I would choose for normal hunting or extended target shooting sessions but it works for him.

Well we know it wont shoot BH209
A friend has had trouble getting it to shoot 777
Its outlawed in a lot of places
Its outlawed in a lot of compition
it will shoot good with Swiss black powder
thats all I need to know about it

The guy I went to the range with was sighting in his new CVA Electra. His load was 150gr of 777 pellets and a 270 Platinum Powerbelt. His load averaged just under 2100fps and shot about 1" at 100 yards. He also tried 100gr of pellets and it shot almost exactly 3" low to the 150 load and about 1800fps. Unfortunately for me he finished shooting about the same time I did and had put his gun up before I realizedI hadn't got to shoot it. He said maybe next time since we both had to get going. I was impressed with the guns accuracy but it's not any more accurate than mine and it took him about as long to load and shoot as it did me. I didn't see any huge advantage in the system, just different in a couple of steps. I still want to shoot it just to say I have.

I drew that up and posted it on several forums several years ago. Later added the Joltballer version. :D

CVA took it a bit further. ;)

Some good points made here about legality. Be sure.

Hard to descibe rifle, September 3, 2007
By sport02 from blair ne.

"Unique rifle,well balanced. Very easy to load, very easy to clean.I found no accuracy shooting at eighty yards until I dropped down to 120 grains of triple 7 with a 245 grain powerbelt bullet.It is difficult to get used to the trigger pull, it seems to be a long pull, which I felt caused flinching while target practicing. This probably will not occur on a shot on an animal.My biggest concern is that when you reloading, the electric primer is active and you are basically looking down the barrel while loading. On conventional muzzleloaders, the primer is the last procedure to reloading."

terrific rifle, August 26, 2007
By Rockitrob from Ravenna Ohio

"First off, reading of the manual is absolutely a must. Your not putting together a TV, by its nature it is dangerous.Make sure to use a anti-seize compound on anything with threads! There is also an included DVD showing the operation. For those purists that use a 209 inline or a compound bow this might seem like it is hardly sporting to use an electric rifle. If it is only about a sporting chance then sticks and stones might be better but if you like clean and simple this is a terrific rifle. The trigger is smooth and even with NO creep. To charge the capacitor a switch must be turned on near the underside by the trigger. A light comes on solid and flashes when the capacitor is charged. A second trigger safety must be pushed forward with your thumb on top of the rifle. When the trigger is pulled this gets reset back to safe. Mine has a black plastic stock that has a white cobweb design to it that seems good for the elements and handling. All the Electra's have a scope mount to accept weaver style rings but they suggest you use Durasite rings. The included sling is very comfortable. My first shot was with 100 grains of Triple seven powder with a hand cast 45 in a Knight sabot. The target was a 14"steel plate at 75 yards. The first shot hit almost dead center with no site adjustment. Moving back to 100 yards I could not hit it and the sight will need to be adjusted for that. The barrel was really not that dirty and the ignition system does what they claim as far as burning up everything. The included tools were thoughtful and well planned. A longer range rod should be bought at the time of purchase as the field rod is rather short and hard to use for multiple shots. With the included tools disassembly was very easy. Everyone who has shot this rifle loves it and I have over 100 rounds through it so far."

I've got one. VERY accurate. Moreso than I am. Breeze to shoot, breeze to load, breeze to clean. If you do like it says and brush the igniter with the supplied brush every 5 shots or so, it will shoot all day long.

Some issues I've had with mine:
I could not adjust the iron sights low enough. At 50 yards, with the rear sight as low as it would go, it was hitting about 7 inches above point of aim. But I put multiple bullets through the same hole at that range. Just too high. So I bought a Burris B-plex 2-7 for it. Zeroed it for 75 yards, but just barely. Was zeroing on a 34degF day with wind, and the alkaline battery would not charge the capacitor once it got to ambient temperature.

Took it hunting in temps of high 30's to low 40's (max couldn't have been more than 42 that day) and took a nice (albeit small) doe with it at about 65 yards. That was with the second shot of the day. No cleaning of anything in between. Feeling good about it then.

Cleaned, 10 days later take it out Friday again. Temps hovering right around freezing all day, with a STIFF wind. Didn't see anything, and after hours I decided I wanted to empty it instead of taking the battery out (the legal way of transporting it with a projectile in it). It wouldn't charge the capacitor. It showed a good charge on the LED, but after trying 4 times to get it to fire, i gave up, went back to the Jeep, removed battery, and came home. All this is with alkaline batteries. I have not tried a lithium yet, like the manual suggests.

So....
Simplicity: ++
Accuracy: +++
Cold weather reliability: ... well, jury is still out. I'll go into next season with lithiums and we'll see.

I'm just glad that I got it from Cabela's while it was $150 off, and am currently awaiting my $100 rebate check from CVA. So essentially i got it half price. It may end up I'm glad of that.

The good news is the first ML season here in MD is usually plenty warm. So I should be able to use it fine for at least the early season.
