SHTF Scenario #999

November 5, 2003, 03:52 PM
OK Troops,

Here's the deal. There's an impending nuclear exchange and you have no and I mean NO time to pack everything you might think you need to survive in the wilderness. For those of you who try to change any SHTF scenario to fit your own personal ideas of what one should do, or bring.....
I don't care how many boxes of Pampers, bottles of Midol, Prozac, or Viagra you think you'll need to keep your family happy. And I don't care what your favorite brand of birth control, peanut butter, soda pop, or alcoholic beverage is.

All I want to know is, if you had only enough time to grab 4 rifles and their ammo, what would they be?

Cool. I gedda play first.

1) .308 scoped bolt gun for reaching out.
2) AK (or AR) in case of "riot control" or a serious one-to-many situation.
3) A .22 for low-noise game getting.

Don't need a 4th.

November 5, 2003, 03:59 PM
Remington Model 700 in .30-06
Winchester 9422 in .22LR

I don't need a fourth.

November 5, 2003, 04:11 PM
Scoped Rem 700 / .308
Ruger 10/22
Rem 870

November 5, 2003, 04:16 PM
Savage Striker 22lr
Contender 223
Taurus 650

I ain't sticking around for any firefights. Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack hide out 'til things get abit more organized. I'll be hanging with Jack.

November 5, 2003, 04:23 PM
Since no one else is playing by the rules, I won't either...

* DSA STG58A w/ 3-9x scope -- main line use and long range -- 8 mags
* Mossy 500 w/ riot barrel -- up close and food-getter -- slugs, #1 buck, birdshot
* 1911 45 ACP -- fight to get my rifle -- 4-round mags

That's it. If you MADE me pick one more

* Good scoped bolt 22 rifle

November 5, 2003, 04:32 PM
Ok, I'll play by the rules, since no one else can. :D

From what I have on hand:
1) SAR-1
2) SKS
3) AR-7
4) M/N M-44

If I could pick and choose from anything: (and break the rules, like everyone else)
1) M-4/M203 combo
2) Rem 700 PSS in .308
3) suppressed 10/22
4) Springfield M6 Scout (it's a rifle, it just happens to have a .410 barrel also)

4. enfield mk1 (pun intended)

November 5, 2003, 04:40 PM
If all I can take is rifles...I won't bother taking 4

Bolt action .308 for bigger game

.22lr for little game

If you are going to get abusive I will also take my FAL so I don't need another caliber....and...and...damn...another .22lr

The FAL might come in handy....since I didn't bring the toilet paper I may have to hold up my fellow survivors!

November 5, 2003, 04:40 PM
Shotguns and pistols too? or just rifles. I would say ...

HK-91 with a trigger job and a hollowed Cetme stock to hold a small parts/repair kit. Scoped AO nightsights and a bipod. Lot's of mags 30 or so 20rnd and a couple of 5rnd mags for prone or long distance work.

bolt action sturdy war rifle like the mosin-nagant or mauser 98k with a .30-06 barrel and a chamber adapter to fire the .308, and the .32acp for quiet work. Scoped, doped, and floated.

Lever action .22 BL-22 with a scope and backup peep sight or a .22 hangun, mk2 competition long barrel with a can but I like the BL-22 and it's handy light and easy to shoot well.

then the last one is, depending on the question above, a g20 with lot's of ammo and barrels in .40, 10mm, and 9mm That way I could shoot reloaded cast 10s in the aftermarket barrel, and scrounged 9 and 40 in the same gun. mags for each round.

Or a 12 guage mossberg 590 SP with choate pistol grip speed feed, 20" bbl and 9rnd magazine. Side saddle full of buck, speed feed full of Brenneke sabot slugs butt cuff full of slugs, sling full of buck. Ghost ring sights, fiberoptic front sight, no electronics, no tritium to die out.

November 5, 2003, 04:46 PM
well, since i only have 3 rifles, they would be:

1. savage 10fp .308
2. savage 112 .300WM
3. AR

if i could take any of my other weapons as well, i would take:
1. savage 10fp .308
2. rem 1100 tac shotgun
3. AR
4. sig P228

November 5, 2003, 04:48 PM
I'll bite, #4 mk1 ha ha ha:D

November 5, 2003, 04:57 PM
I already live in the "wilderness" so I don't have to pack to go anywhere.

Besides, if this is an all out nuclear exchange it won't matter anyway. The dozens of missle silos make all of MT a #1 target.

It should warm up for a couple minutes, though.

November 5, 2003, 05:06 PM
That's a good point, I wonder what Vermont is like from a missile silo standpoint. I want to live there.

November 5, 2003, 05:11 PM
Some people have some serious problems with playing "let's pretend" around here.

On hand rifles:
1. M38 Mosin Nagant
2. Romanian SKS
3. Ruger 10/22
4. My 12 ga pump

If I could choose:
1. An AK, any decent variant, really
2. Some scoped rifle in the .308 - 30-06 range
3. Ruger 10/22
4. My 12 ga pump :)

PS: If my pump shotty doesn't count as a rifle, then substitute a Mas 36/51 for ones on hand, and an SKS D for if I got to pick.

November 5, 2003, 05:12 PM
1. AR10 in 308
2. Ruger 10-22
3. Walther P99

November 5, 2003, 05:25 PM

If you had a rifled bbl for your shotgun, then I can't see why it wouldn't count. (Nobody said it couldn't be adaptle to other purposes.) Heck, if I were running the show and you didn't have a rifled bbl, I'd say bring it anyways. You'd just have to promise to not use it until you found an appropriate bbl.

I spent 5 years living at Malmstrom AFB there in Great Falls as a small child during the late '70's and early '80's. I vividly recall waking up from nightmares of Soviet missile strikes on the base. Curses on my dad for telling a 7 year old with a vivid imagination that he now lived in one of the top 10 targets of the Soviets.

November 5, 2003, 05:49 PM

Yeah, they are all over up here, not just at the bases.

You will be driving along and see a chain link fenced area out in a cow pasture, with an American flag flying over it. A bunch of them just up north of where I am.

All of these are still active, AFAIK

But some rogue nation or terrorists are not going to bother with our missle silos, as we might not even have a target to shoot back at. More likely hit some big population centers to get a body count.

In that case, the biggest issue is people's reaction as they wonder "who's next?"

I wouldn't recommend heading up here for wilderness right now, as the chill factor is below zero today.

I only have 4 rifles so that would be:

Weatherby .340
Browning HighWall breech loader in .30-06
Centrury FAL
Bushmaster M17S

If you include shotguns I'll trade my Browning for my Remington 11-87

November 5, 2003, 06:54 PM
Just from what I have handy, an SKS, BRNO #1 .22LR, .308 Garand and a 91/59 Mosin Nagant. Couple that with a pair of 1911s and a CZ-75 (plus a kadet slide) for sidearms. I have loaded clips and mags for all of them. I figure that once I run out of ammo, I should be able to come across some more for at least one of them.

November 5, 2003, 07:42 PM

My dad was a Facility Manager at those sites. Most of the time, he was at Foxtrot launch control facility. He's got some interesting stories about things they did to several of the young Lieutenants downstairs.

One time they sent a snake down in the elevator, which was promptly shot as the doors opened. (To stay firearms related, it was shot with a S&W .38 SPL at point blank range.)

Another time, soon after they changed from fresh prepared meals to some form of pre-made meals, an LT ordered my dad to provide him with a steak dinner. My dad called the local rancher, who was a former NCO himself. The kind rancher didn't give him a steak, but he did send over some veal, which was promptly sent down the elevator. For some reason though, the LT didn't like his dinner still alive. At least that one didn't get shot.

My dad does occasionally have a good sense of humor. His nickname back then was 'Fearless Frank', cuz he didn't take no crap from anybody, regardless of rank.

Me'n'TallPine; I'm already in the wilderness. But, if I boogied to the far back country, to my hunt camp, I'd most likely take:

My "Ol' Pet" '06.
One of the Model 12s.
A Walther Model 2 semi-auto .22.
One of my 1911s...

Lotta people making that 4th firearm a shotgun or pistol. 3 rifles covers a lotta bases. Small, medium, large...what else do you need?

Yeah, I know, varmits, leverguns, beanfield guns, etc. etc.

November 5, 2003, 11:13 PM
Ok, in keeping with the rules:

1). Remington Sendero- .300winmag

2). S.A. Inc. N.M. M1-A- .308

3). Colt M-4 Sporter- .223*

4). Colt M-4 Sporter- .223*

* Have a .22lr conversion unit for the ARs. Maybe not in keeping with the rules?;) Yes, I do have two.:D

November 5, 2003, 11:21 PM
1. CAR 16

2. AR in M-4 config

3. Remington 700 in 375 H&H

1. Steyr SSG in 308

November 5, 2003, 11:23 PM
- Handi-Rifle in .223
- Romanian SKS
- Armscor M22
- Sub 2000

And my favorite brand of peanut butter is Skippy.:D

six 4 sure
November 6, 2003, 12:41 AM
Assuming I have to pick rifles on hand, from my current inventory I’d have to choose:

1. AR-15 HBAR
2. Polytech M14
3. Winchester Mod 70 .270 WSM
4. CZ 452

November 6, 2003, 01:25 AM
Well what I have packed ready to go is:
CAR-15& lots of mags
CETME & a few Mags
and I would grab the wifes ar-15a2
and yuck mini-30
that way I would be able to use liberated ammo most likely

depending on who the SHTF with I would upgrade after first contact to the following:

Commie Bad Guys:
I would take 2 ak-74's if and disable the mini-30 and ar15a2 (keep some parts to repair the car) and keep the cetme and car
If they had a pk type mg I would take that instead of the 2 ak-74's and also any grenades/rpg's that they donated to me

NATO Bad Guys:
dump both the semi ar's for m4a2's with m203 i don't know if i would trade my semi car-15 for any 3rd burst variant would depend
if it was there a m249 or mp5 would be a nice trade for the mini-30 :)

the only rifle i would keep no matter what would be the cetme unless a genuine h&k g3 could be traded for it

November 6, 2003, 02:52 AM
I dont own 4 rifles. How about 4 firearms?

This is what I would bring if I had a means to haul it.

STG58 (FAL) (with scope!)
Lots of mags, lots of ammo.... many flavors.(~2k, SA, Port, Indian :barf:, AP...)

Mossy 500 (need truck for this one)
50 double-ought BS, 25 magnum slugs, and 100 #8 shells.

My SS beretta 92fs 100rds of hydrashock and the .22 LR beretta conversion I will be aquiring in november. A case of fmj reloads.... for barter maybe? I also have a full parts set for this pistol, and I know how to use it! :D

My g22. A few mags, not much ammo, very, very reliable. (have yet to learn it's inner workings however)

November 6, 2003, 03:15 AM
Since NO time to pack, and I don't keep any rifles here.
Got CCWs and mags tho'.
Might be an advantage if hiding in plain sight, till I make it where I'm going. :)

November 6, 2003, 04:08 AM
Would I carry a Golf Bag around to secure the 4 rifles??

Just kidding.

Into the Jeep would go..

Scoped Marlin .22 model 995 (easily supressed if need should arise) Bit of pvc pipe from the garage and steel wool would go too... 3 mags, sling.

Norinco mak-90 .223 and all of its mags would go (thats a LOT of magazines)

Scoped Savage 116 .30-06 would go, for long range and game getting, might have to spray paint it brown though. Get spray cans from garage. Get ammo can of hunting loads, find spare mag hding in bottom of coffee can in gun room.

Remington 870 would go too, with a 21 inch deer barrel, buckshot, slugs etc would go too.

Pistols would leave me weeping as to which to choose. Throw a BUNCH in a lock box, all the mags I own. FEG hi-power would probably get used the most.

November 6, 2003, 12:29 PM
OK, I'll play....

To keep with the rules, and what I have on hand.......

US Rifle Cal .30 M1

Mosin-Nagant M-44

Marlin Lever Action 30A in .30-30

Marlin 99 .22LR

November 6, 2003, 01:05 PM
I'll play.. Of what I have on hand, I'd grab my:

Remington Mod. 700 in .30-06,
H&K SL8-1 in .223 Remmy,
Ruger 10/22,
Savage Mod. 99E in .30-.30 (this one is purely for sentimental reasons) :o

November 6, 2003, 02:46 PM
1. AR-15 w/ scope
2. AR-15 w/ scope
3. AR-15 w/ scope
4. AR-15 w/ scope

With a truck load of ammo.

Same rifle makes things easier.

Each family member has their own personal setup. I'll take the grenade launcher on mine, please!

November 6, 2003, 03:14 PM

1. FN FAL .308 (for aggress/defense)
2. Ruger 77 Ultralight .308 (for eating)
3. Ruger 10/22 with glass (small game/supressed sound)
4.a. If with big critters, Marlin 1895 in 45/70
4.b. If not with big critters, AR Carbine

November 6, 2003, 08:18 PM
I only have one rifle. Yugoslav* 24/47 8mm Mauser. Needs a scope. I also have a pump shottie and a 10mm Witness. (Hey, it is accurate out to 100yds acc. to the manufacturer. It should count, right? ;))

If I get to play pretend:

1. Bushmaster AR-15 w/ 24in bull-barrel, flash-hider, evil bayo lug, the works. Approx. one a$$-load of ammo in mags.
2. Henry Repeating US Survival, w/ a couple extra mags and a few boxes of ammo.
3. AK-47 SAR-1. Approx. one a$$-load of ammo in mags.
4. Remington 700 in .308, bull-barrel of 24in, floated and glassed, bad-mofo-of-a-scope and charted out to 1000yds w/ approx. one a$$-load of Lake City Match 168gr NBT Boattail.

Nowthen, as long as I dont have to hump that through the woods for umpteen miles, I should be peachy-keen.

These threads alway tell me I need more rifles. "You get to pick only four rifles. . ." Well, I only have three in the cabinet, so I guess I would drag along as a fourth my No. 4 Mark II caked in cosmoline so I could trade it for food when I meet a cruffler. So here are the other three:

M38 Swedish Mauser to get food

M39 Finnish Mosin Nagant to get revenge.

Yugo SKS to get out of trouble.

November 6, 2003, 08:42 PM
It is your duty and destiny to buy more rifles, shotguns, revolvers and autochuckers. Go forth and procure. When you need to rent a warehouse, you may have enough.

November 6, 2003, 09:16 PM

2. My CZ .22 Training Rifle

3. my Cetme
4. my custom 10/22

at least 20 mags between the two AR's
six to eight mags for the Cetme

A 7.62x51 autoloader, a 12-gauge pump shotgun, and a .22.

Don't need no rifle

I should have known an Okie couldn't follow directions ;)
You set a bad example for the troops

Some interesting answers though

And OEF-VET's Dad sounds like my kind of people.
He's the kind of guy you can listen to all night, sitting around a campfire :D
