Why is it required to post your state in the title?

I don't understand the issue of it being so important to post the state you live in within the title of the thread. Someone please explain in detail to me what that is all about.

When I scan the topics to buy or trade I look for (OH) first because I'm not interested in an FFL purchase unless really needed. I would rather do a FTF transaction. Even when buying brass I look for (OH) first.

Location=Location=Location--This IS what sells. I see no complaint to do so-it's not like someone could come right to your house by knowing what state you are in??

I wish other forums would require a State in the subject line as well. It makes it easy to ignore locations you don't wish to buy from. In addition, I think a price in the subject line would also be nice so I don't waste time browsing overpriced items.

Instead of copying/pasting my response to the same question a few years ago, take a look at post #4 in this thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=247890

First post and already complaining. That usually happens on thursday.

There are many reasons. Many folk prefer FTF deals only so they can examine the item in person. Also, shipping prices vary based upon location and knowing the origination of an item can help estimate that additional expense. In the end, it's proven very useful to the forum members, they actually seem to derive benefit from it, and so it's the rule.
Oh, and a word of advice - waving your arms and copping an attitude (yes, I read your now-deleted ForSale ad comments) is not a good way to introduce yourself to the forum. I would suggest that you take a bit of time to learn the forum personality before jumping too far into the deep end.

Well, from what I can see from the answers, there is really not a good answer to my question other than some guys are more concerned with what the shipping is going to cost them, more like a "nevermind, it's too far" issue, there is no law that I am aware that states I can not mail empty brass shell casings to another country if I wanted to, I then have to assume I can not ship a collectors coke can to a buyer either, or a tuna fish can, get where I'm going with it?
The "rule" seems to be a "this forum only" thing and I think it's a bit silly, and quite useless information to bother posting unless someone asks.
I was not copping an attitude, I just didn't understand what the death penalty for my post was over the governing law of having to add 2 letters to my thread title.
So, with that said, screw it, I'll go find a new place to get yelled at, this is ridiculous, I'll keep my damned brass for all the hassle this has been.

Dang son....It's an easy rule to follow, and no one is picking on you or telling you where to sell your brass. Chill out. :)
If your deleted post was anything like this last one, I can see why it was deleted. The mods did you a favor to help you start on a good tone.

Seems like an odd way to join a forum. I've met a couple of Iowa folks because of posting my state in the header.
Thanks Mods!

Remember too: there are federal laws that we all need to follow, but there are state laws that come into play in many transactions. It may be OK in some states to purchase a normal capacity magazine for your rifle, for instance, but only if it has been owned in the state since before a law went into effect; importing one after the fact may be a felony. Selling one to an out-of-stater may also be a felony for both the buyer and receiver.
There are way too many situations to list as to what always is/always isn't/sometimes is legal in any particular area, but the problem is common enough that we simply ask people to list the state in the title of the FS/WTB post. That, plus the fact that many prefer face-to-face transactions for other reasons. When I lived in Savannah, for instance, I bought a mostly completed rifle for $50 and had to pay the local gunshop $75 for the FFL transfer. I'm not looking to discuss where to get a better deal in Savannah -- I"m just pointing out that buying and selling firearms is more complicated than the process would be with most any other product category, and special accommodations have been made to try and compensate.

I read all, even the links. It becomes apparent that the good answers are from those that provided them and not always viewed as such by all. I don't post in the classifieds on .org because it is overly regulated. Other than that, I like the discussions and contribute from time to time. Thanks to all for the information.

Good job Mal H and others. This situation IS exactly the reason that on another forum, that I am a member of, requires at least 25 posts and 10 days membership, to buy or sell. We all need to get to know each other, and the rules before any money is exchanged IMO. The 25/10 rule may be something to think about on TheHighRoad also??

Just read Mal's post referenced above (http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=3017912&postcount=4).
Succinct, clear, informative.
I've often wondered what the reasons were,
but it just intuitively seemed clear to me so I never asked.

You're right Mal, I did and got no response, old mind, poor memory, thanks for reminding me. You won't have to do it again.
Oh! a question comes to mind, late, of course: Does this mean that I now have a position on the Mods precarious position list?
After all it is the first time I've been called to task for a mistake, all my fault and no one but mine, but it obviously planted a wrath seed.

Why do we need User names?
RachetJaw, this is not very cool of you. Why would you leave the forum because of this? Are you really paranoid of people finding what state you're in or are you just being difficult? Why not hang out a while longer and see what this is about? There are all types of people here to get along with. We have a whole genre going on here: easy going guys and gals, cantankerous old farts, wise old dude's, max load young buck's, recoil happy loaders, tack drivers, anal tack drivers, sick over the top ballistics debaters, green/red and blue loader's, etc... the list goes on. Good grief man we have people arguing about the "factory crimp die" for weeks on end. If you cannot find happyness here then you're way too normal. Just give it a whirl and jump in laughing.

Something tells me that potential buyers are better off without having to deal wih RachetJaw.
My experience is that people that react to simple rules with such vitriol are also likely to be less than ideal to deal with when it comes to issues of money.
