Falling back in love with a Glock
Sven
January 19, 2003, 10:37 PM
Brief history: I started with a Glock 17, then got a CZ75B and then finally a 1911-style pistol.
I shot the Glock again extensively today, and find that the thing is pretty darn accurate, light as heck, and easy to shoot... the plastic seems to absorb the recoil. Not sure how to describe it better than that... but I LIKE IT.
...all I can say is that after months of being left in the safe when I took trips to the range, my trusty ol' Glock 17 is moving back up the charts... 'with a bullet'... in my personal favorites list.
I agree that the Glock isn't as sexy as my other guns, but it sure is hard to find any other complaints.

Sven, I'm getting a little worried about you.
You title a thread about "falling in love" with a Glock.
Then you write about your other guns being more sexy.
Do you need some time off -- maybe a vacation...? :D

Right now, I am in the process of saving $ to buy a Glock 17(again) after selling one 'bout a year ago. Its been about a year of futile resistance!

Dude, I'm _on_ Vacation.
Truth is, I love all my guns. Not the sort of 'love' I feel for a beautiful woman. Not the sort of 'sexy' I'd use to describe the same.

Funny, as much as I like my other guns more, my collection just felt lacking w/o a Glock. THe (my :neener: ) universe has been at peace since I picked up my 36 :)

Same thing has happened to me....I get a new pistol and think "Wow, this will replace my Glock!"
Then, after the new gun isn't "new" anymore, the Glock is back to primary position.
So many have been given the opportunity to replace my Glock....none have succeeded.
YMMV; flame away.

Though as of late I've totally fallen out of love with the company that made it, my second generation G-17 is likely my favorite "serious" gun.
(A bit OT) Pre-ban mags for it actually seem to be dropping in price a bit lately too. Trade in's for $53; Thats not much higher than standard new mags for some pistols...

It's cyclical. I almost have enough guns to keep some level of infatuation going with at least one of them at all times.
Almost enough. :)

A couple years back, I found a pistol to replace my Glock 17...
It took awhile to find it, but when I did I was simply awe-struck!
Afterall... my Glock 34 is The Best Pistol Ever Built!
Bwahahahahaha!
Resistance is futile...
You will be assimilated!

Could it be that the impending sunset of the 10-round mag limit law is beginning to weigh on the magazine vendors? Are they trying to shrink their inventories so they won't be caught flat footed if these magazines can be manufactured once again?

I'd suspect dealers hedging thier bets on that exact thing pogo2. Nobody knows whats going to happen to those $53 pre-bans after 04, but heres some scenarios.
Ban expires, not replaced: $53 mag now worth $4.50
New ban comes in prohibiting ALL hi-caps, even prebans: $53 mag now worth $0.00
New ban very similar to old one (pre-ban/post-ban) put permanatly in place $53 mag now worth $100 or much more...
I wouldn't want to be the guy making the decisions on a boatload of those things right now.

Actually already missed out on the best deal, it seems someone got confused and was sending out new FML mags to people who ordered the $53.50 used NFML. They fixed that though:(

Sven,
I know what you mean, except that I never fall out of love with my Glocks. I do have affairs with my 1911s, S&Ws, Colt SAAs, etc. but I still love the way my Glocks shoot and the Ugly Plastic is what protects me.

Hopefully this one stays with me for good :).

Too bad I haven't found one. :(

Actually, I took the long road before getting a Glock. I tried a Makarov (great price, horrid ergonomics), a Kahr MK40 (which I sold), a CZ75BD (which I still have; it's a great gun, although a bit too big for my hand), a Rock Island Armory 1911 (a neat range gun, excellent ergonomics, gutsy caliber, a bit too big for carry), and several revolvers (my S&W 642 is still the best gun I've ever found as far as concealability is concerned). But, for some reason, I resisted the Glock like the dickens. "They feel blocky in my hands," I said.
Around December of last year I decided to give Glock another look, and I found I actually liked the 26. I found a (barely) used one for $399 and put it on layaway. On Jan. 3, 2003, I picked it up and it has been love ever since. The simplicity of the design is fantastic!
Not that I regret buying my other handguns, but I could have saved myself a lot of dough if I had listened to what Boston T. Party said, "Get yourself a Glock, and be done with it." Of course , I wouldn't have had all of the fun of buying a new gun, but I would be a bit richer.

Glocks are very sexy guns. Black is buetiful my friends and black plasitic dead sexy. I also love that I can have my Glock field stripped in about 15 seconds that is sexy too. They may be built like a brick but it is one sexy brick :D

Whoknowswho,
There's actually a G26 there also for $400 w/ tritium sights. It was a long debate in my mind w/c one to get, but I figured w/ the G17 I can use it in IPSC production class as well as an HD gun. I can just add the tritium sight later.
kahr carrier,
Greetings to you as well! :neener:
DAL,
As you might observe, sometimes you get tempted to abandon the dark side, but don't give in, coz its temporary. If you do, the regret is long lasting. :D
P.S.
the Glock is really is a neat design.

Ditto Sven. The Glocks (I have a G17 and G19) are darned fine pistols. I pick up and mess with other auto loaders, and then put them down. I guess because, they have nothing over the Glock. But I teethed on a Glock, I like the trigger, and never got into that M1911 SA thing. I would LOVE to have a Sig P210 though!

I started with a G17,then migrated to Sigs, and then to Walthers, then S&W's semi's, and on to HK's and always seem to come back to the Dark Side..
Glocks forever, baby!...:D

The one question I always ask when returning from the range is:
"Which gun would I pick up if I heard that 'bump' in the night?"
It varies from time to time, and also depends on my current inventory of defense loads... but most of the time, I admit it _is_ the Glock 17, ideally stoked with 17+1 (where legal) high performance HP loads.
The odds of having to use a weapon in self-defense are astronomically small - if it happens, I aim to be prepared. In such a grave event, my primary concern is reliability. The Glock has never let me down in 2,500 rounds.
I wish I could say that about my other guns, but it would not be true.

Sooner or later you'll come around. They all do.
Sorta like saying:
"Sooner or later you will drive a Toyota Camry." :p
Some folks just refuse to drive anything other than a 911 (or shoot a 1911). I have nothing against those folks - in fact, they pass me on the highway all the time. ;) Then again, sometimes I pass 911s parked on the side of the highway, with hazard lights blinking and a "VP of Sales"-type guy standing there on his cell phone. :p
Ideally, I'm going to have a big garage and a lot of cars. And a big vault, with lots of guns.

No, mr. hankey and sven........I will not buy a glock......I was thinking about the G20 once, but, then Dan Wesson came out with a 10MM and that is what I will probably get unless I find a Delta Elite somewhere at a decent price.........I'm afraid I am not a glock enthusiast.........I have shot just about every glock made at the annual glock match at our gun club for the last 3 years as a range officer trying to keep these guys from shooting themselves.....The glock rep brings all the latest toys and some ammo out there for us to try out between matches on the weekends, and the glock just doesn't do it for me....the XD probably won't either.......

Well, I have played with Glocks plenty. But I am an American, and as such I like the old 1911/.45ACP. My current infatuation is with getting a Wilson CQB. Fortunately, I am not old enough to spend my $$ on handguns yet (but I AM old enough for the Navy to trust me with nuclear technology soon....), so I have time to decide. But a Wilson CQB or Protector, with a complementary .22LR conversion? Could be nice. Or a Glock 17 with same? Who knows yet.

Wanderinwalker,
I'm an American too and I like Glocks. Our military uses Beretta, H&K and Sigs w/c are all foreign design/made, does that make our military unAmerican?
P.S.
I like 1911's too BTW.

I do that also, Sven. I abandon my plain ol' G23 for pistols with all those pretty levers and angles and buttons for a while. Then I always end up thinking "what would I really feel comfortable with on me if the bad thing happened?". And I go back to carrying that boring dadgummed Glock 23.

Longbow,
Nope, they're not unAmerican. They're just updating equipment with the lowest bidder! ;) Going into combat I would rather have an H&K, SIG, Beretta, Walther or Glock to back-up my M-4, M-16, M-14 (whatever)! What I meant by the "I'm an American" comment is that bigger, and more, is better!
jem375,
I am sadly aware of the expense of Wilson pistols. But then again, I do want to go on pricey hunting trips someday, and I want to carry a Weatherby rifle, so....
Countdown 2 days until I ship for Great Lakes. Oh boy, oh boy!!

When I first started shopping for a pistol that I would carry concealed I annoyed every gun shop owner because I kept telling them that all they have are crappy Glocks and not enough decent polymer pistols..this was before Springfield XD and right after SW99....I always told myself that I would never buy a Glock because everyone has glocks..Glocks were worse than Hondas. I wanted to feel like dirty harry or james bond and get something different...
I picked up a SW99..and shot it for a month...to this day I still wake up..stretch..and then kick myself in the *** for every buying that pistol...
I promptly sold that Jam-o-matic and picked me up a G19...
kinda makes me wanna go car shopping...cause I'm never looking back..
sure I'll own other guns..but when it comes to carrying or straight out reliability..I give the nod to the Glock, no questions asked.

I don't like Glocks for many reasons, one minor reason being that they're ugly. Ugly, but reliable.

My carry guns are as follows, G26 for warm weather, G30 for cold weather, and G19 for anything but darkness since it doesn't have night sights. I used to think that Glocks were extremely ugly, but now I think they are as good looking as Berettas, if not better. They tend to grow on you after a while.

I like Glocks because I can "gunsmith" on them myself. As a matter of fact the last S&W revolver that I "gunsmithed" on myself just returned via Fed Ex today repaired from S&W in Springfield! :cuss:
