Yeah I caught the tail end of this report yesterday. They said extending the hunting season was "controversial". Why? The deer heard is out of control. Hunt these dump rats and use the meat for homeless shelters, then tell the "environmentalists" to shut up.

Extending hunting season controversial? I'd like to see what some forest managers have to say about that. I read a report this summer (can't recall the source, either forest service or a state DNR) stating, among other things, that deer browsing/buck rubbings are, in some areas, responsible for near-complete suppression of regeneration attempts, both natural and human-initiated, of valuable hardwood/mast-producing trees, mainly oak and hickory. The composition of some forested areas, as a result, is changing, because in these cases the faster-growing, often weaker, less valuable, and less mast-producing trees are favored. There is concern for trickle-down effects on the whole ecosytem of these forests because of this. I've seen this personally on my own property where I can show you several bur oak trees that are several years old but are nothing more than 2-3 foot high ragged shrubs because of yearly deer browsing and rubbing. Just about the only trees with a chance at reaching maturity are the fast-growing and tough-as-nails (plus, armed with wicked thorns) osage-orange.

Along with what Rick posted, throw this at them as well. Damn (mostly) city-dwelling enviros...they think deer are so cute when they don't have to live with and witness the massive destruction their out-of-control population is inflicting.

If you look at the Bio's of most of the loud mouthed (celebrity) enviro-nuts, they're city dwellers with NO practical wilderness experience. They wouldn't know the difference between a marsh and a bog, or which spieces of deer they were looking at.:banghead:
