Tip:
Just make sure the persimmons you decide to eat is ripe...
If you don't know how to tell if ripe or not...you will learn rather quickly...:D

Is it illegal/immoral/twisted to hunt under a white oak or old apple tree??

I'd do it if there were one near my place. IMHO, it's not cheating.

P.S. - Agree with you re1973, you can tell pretty quick if one is ripe or not.

Persimmons are delicious food when ripe.

When unripe, persimmons will make you look like this: 8-*

And no, it's not cheating.

Cheating--No
pax , explained the unripe better than I ( btdt also I see) :D
Unripe/Overipe work very very well in slingshots ( depending on, umm, well you get the picture).

The wood is very dense and used for a variety of things...like golf club heads. The wood makes a great walking stick/shooting stick. BTDT.

Is it also cheating making a buck or bull think he's about to score? No it's not cheating. It's using good tactics. Successful hunting takes place near food and water sources, along trails leading to them and during hours animals are most likely moving to and from them.

I have a mental picture of MeekandMild doing Snoopy's Vulture impression in a persimmon tree above a well antlered deer.

KM you're absolutely right. :D There is a little 6 point buck I've been watching the past few weeks which comes to eat dropped persimmons every morning (and later if the weather is rainy). I really thought about putting a bow stand in the tree just like Snoopy the buzzard, but I'm not confident in my ability to put an arrow into the exact place its needed, so I'm lurking, waiting for gun season so as to give him a quick and peaceful exit into my oven and frying pan.

H&H a persimmon is a soft fruit which deer love even more than apples and muscadines. A 50 foot tree contains thousands of them and a few of them fall off every night so the first deer to get there each morning gets to eat them.

"It's the Great Persimmon, MeekandMild" But as soon as he flicked off his safety, you know Lucy would snatch the rifle out of his hands and spook the deer.

The Great Persimmon! I like that! :D

This morning I went out in my Realtree Camo and pretended to be a tree for an hour. Two does came up to bowshot range + 10 feet, fell on their butts laughing and ran off! :(

When gun season come we'll see who has the last laugh.

Please don't shoot me, I might be out there eating them too. Persimmons are a wonderful fruit, I remember as a kid mashing a bunch flat and drying them, good fruit jerky.

They won't be ripe until after one good killing frost. Unripe is similar to the sensation of eating a green banana only worse. You kinda feel like you developed Mr. Anderson mouth from the first Matrix.

Around where I'm from the deer don't get too many, the quick brown fox is on the scene first.

OK, I forget , what's the rythme about the quick brown fox.
Ok I've had Persimmon bread, and preserves...and there is a "wine" too.
Jerky? is this like dehydrated fruit.

Dang M&M, see what you started? You are hereby instructed to get the deer, post pics, along with pics and recipes..." floured and peppered cast iron skilleted venison served with persimmon bread, persimmon wine and persimmon preserves over vanilla ice cream for dessert" ...

We are depending on you M&M.

My parents have a Persimmon tree and a couple of Quince bushes.

Great stuff ripe.

Shades of hell if unripe.

Somebody post a picture of what a persimmon actually looks like. The two links above only show a tree.

FWIW here is a link to a nursery which sells 7 types of Japanese persimmon trees and sells native trees. http://www.womacknursery.com Mrs. Meek bought some plants from them last year and got a pretty good deal.

Persimmon tip: harvest when ripe by cutting a bit of the stem. Hang from stem in a cool, dry area until fully dried. Slice thin and serve. Yummy!

OK guys, black powder season FINALLY started today. So I harvested my first ever persimmon-fed deer. It was a young doe, the fattest deer I've ever harvested. Could have taken a buck too, but we have a one antlerless + one antlered per day limit and I wasn't 100% certain she was a doe until I'd spooked the two little bucks away. Of course, the time it takes to reload seems like a good excuse, plus the fact my loyal tracking dog decided to chase the live ones instead of sniffing out the doe. Then there is the fact I'm concentrating on does this year to thin down the herd. I'll think of some more excuses later. :D

I read this post, and voted on the "??? Persimmons? What are persimmons?" option.

Today I was in the produce section of the local Grab and Run (that’s Stop and Shop for those of you who don't live in New York) and I saw a sign that said "persimmons". Under the sign were a bunch of orange acorn shaped things about 1.5 - 2" in diameter. Deciding to be brave and lose a buck, I bought one and brought it home.

I looked at it for a few minutes as it sat on the table in front of me, and then gave it the dog test -- my family's Australian shepherd is afraid of some vegetables... like white eggplant -- but he gave a negative reaction... no fear. Generally a good sign.

The persimmon was just about as hard as a rock, so I imagined a pomegranate like interior. I was surprised upon cutting into it that it was pretty much solid all the way through except for a funky pattern inside of the flesh. Regardless, I cut out a nice big slice of the tasty looking orange fruit and put it in my mouth.

:what: :what: :what:

God almighty that is the absolutely the most bitter thing I have ever ingested (and this is coming from an idiot who took a big swig of "bitters"... that horrible concoction for making mixed drinks.) Also from experience, I will say that it felt like having fiberglass powder in my mouth.

Maybe they're better when they're actually ripe, but this is one person who is not going to find out.

Fool me seven times, shame on you... fool me 8 times, shame on me.

/Arcli9ht

Oh, and to keep it gun related, I wonder what kind of distance I could get with one of these things out of my potato cannon (the Chibi Killstick Jr.)...

Er, you didn't wait until it was ripe. :barf: A ripe persimmon is not at all firm, its sort of like an overripe red plum in its consistancy, very mushy and very sweet. :)

Deer love them. Our big persimmon tree looks like it has about 2,000 of them on it. Most are out of reach, so the deer come every day and eat the windfalls. 'Possums also like them.

Nope. It just won't work. Sitting over looking a persimmon tree is another matter. If you're under it, you're between Bambi and his dinner. Over there, he can come in so a few days later you can have venison for dinner.

Well, to be techical about it, I've been sitting uphill from the tree then I wait until they finish eating and walk back toward the woods. Haven't had any more luck because I've only seen spike bucks and button bucks since opening day and I"m waiting for their grandfather.
