For what it is worth, and I have never been able to confirm it, but many, many years ago, it was said that the only way FDR was able to win in the late 30s was for the Communist to be absorbed into the Democrat party and not run their own candidate.

From they way things have turned out, I am inclined to believe it.:barf:

IIRC, the American Communist Party did run their own candidates in the 1930s. William Z Foster was their candidate in 1924, 1928, and 1932. They opposed the New Deal until the "Popular Front" days, beginning in 1935, did a switcheroo from strongly criticizing Nazi Germany until the USSR signed a non-aggression pact in 1939, at which time they began to criticize the "unjust" war, then finally rallied behind the war when Germany invaded the USSR. Consistantly inconsistant.
