My father in law gave my son his old marlin 336 lever action--it's a .44 magnum. Any specifics about what ammo to get for deer hunting?

Your Father in law is a very nice person. Make sure your boy gives him some backstrap from his next deer.

Mine feeds ands eat everything that I've put in it. from the lowest special all the way to the hottest mag. I try to stay away from lead due to the micro-grooving.

Any brand 240 grain JHP should work fine for deer.

Interesting. I didn't know Marlin offered the 336 in .44 mag. Sure it's not an 1894? Regardless, I've had success with Georgia Arms' 200 gr. JHP "Deer Stopper" ammo.

The first Marlin .44 mags were built on modified 336 actions years ago.

Not real satisfactory to use a 30-30 length action on a pistol cartridge and some of them didn't work so hot.

They have long since moved to the pistol length action of the 1894 for it and other pistol size cartridges.

Winchester did the same thing by using the Model 94 30-30 to make a .44 mag.
Again, the action is way longer then it needed to be, or should be.
Winchester went belly up before they really got around to bringing back a U.S. made 92 action for pistol calibers, except for the classy 92's made in Japan for Winchester & Browning.

A pitty too!

When Marlin first offered the 44 mag it was in the 336. Not sure of the timeline, but it was only for a short time. I've only seen 1. The 44 actually functions slightly better in the Marlin 1894, but I would like to have a 336 in 44.
