im going to go coyote hunting with a friend and he says you can only shoot with a magazine that holds no more than 5 rds. i have plenty of 30 rd mags, and am wondering if there is a safe way to take it apart and rig up some sort of permanent plug in the bottom.

if not, do they even sell 5rd mags for the ar?

There are blocks that can be inserted into your mag, but then again, you can buy a 5-round mag from many sources for ~$15-20.

Use your google-fu to find online sellers.

Can't you just put 5 rounds in a mag and be done with it?

You could do a WTT in the For Sale forum and offer to trade a 30-rounder for a factory 5-rounder...

Can't you just put 5 rounds in a mag and be done with it? Good grief!
If the F&G law says a 5-round mag, it means a 5-round mag.

Years ago, Colt supplied 20 round mags blocked to 5 rounds with a L-shaped piece of sheet steel pop-riveted inside to the floor plate.

Might be able to cobble up something like that fairly easily.

It's really easy, disassemble the mag and just a little tape and a wooden dowl to block the follower, or you can try to get one to sit captive inside the spring, much like a shotgun plug.

Never mind, with F&G you probably should get a little mag, around here they will take you stuff and tell you we'll check it out, but if you want it back you'd better show up for your court date, they are VERY strict.

don't canadians use rivets to limit the mag capacity? I remember reading something about it with sks's but not sure how it would be done for AR mag.

Shadow 7D beat me to it...

get a 3/8" wooden dowel, measure and cut. Take out the base plate and insert dowel. That way you aren't permanently modifying the mags, just take the dowel out when you are done hunting.

cant just put 5 rds in for the same reason you cant just put 3 rds in a shotgun while hunting. you need a plug. if the warden checks the weapon and it will accept more than 5rds/3 shells, id lose the gun, fined, and possible jail
