Ongoing performance issues

A number of gun-related sites have been suffering from attacks lately, and it looks like we're on the list too.
We had one earlier this evening that made us unavailable. We're on top of and and are being proactive about it, but there's only so much we can do.
If THR is unavailable, just come back later. :) We're still here, even if you can't reach us temporarily.
Thanks.

Is there any way to identify the attacker, and mount a counter attack?

The type of attack being mounted is most likely a DoS which is Denial Of Service. The strategy is that the attacker either uses many coordinated users or creates a software bot which all attempt to access the attacked site. This surge in traffic creates a slowdown because it uses so much of the bandwidth at the server side. The only way to stop a DoS is ironically to take the site offline to prevent the attackers from accessing it.
A counter attack assumes the attacker has trafficked webspace they care about which you can even go after. Also mounting a coordinated DoS attack probably isn't very highroad.

Thanks, did notice very long loading times lately.
Seems hackers would be pro gun, but who knows.

Im only guessing DDOS because it is extremely simple to do and requires no special software or access. All it requires is a bunch of individuals, or one individual with alot of bandwidth to spoof a bunch of connections. Also the attack sometimes has the result that the ISP hosting the site takes it down to stop the attacks.
So it really does sound like anti-gun people
A.) No skill involved
B.) Needs dedicated individuals
C.) Aim is to silence the opposition

I have been on THR.US and notice they are cruising at full speed. Of course they don't have but maybe 1/10 the traffic over there. Also TFL is running at full speed.

Those are vague enough that they're not very actionable.
Can you describe what you're seeing a bit more?

This is getting a bit long of tooth. I'm closing this to start another thread on the same topic. :)
