I just picked up a Ruger 243 at Cabela's for $599 with a coupon for a Carhartt jacket and another $35 mail-in rebate from Ruger. With the rings included, you can't hardly beat a deal like that.

Even though I am partial to the Model 70 Featherweight in looks and action smoothness, I think it is a good deal. Like I said the bolt is not as smooth I would like, so what can you do other than working the snot out of the bolt to smooth it out? Any kind of oil or lubricant be applied; other than regular gun oil or silicone.

not much can be done w/ the bolt. however, its smoothness, or lack thereof, won't hurt accuracy, function, etc.

btw... i recently scored 2 of those carhart jackets (yes, 2 new rugers), but i am a bit disappointed in them. however, they will make great x-mas gifts. the jackets are probably ideal in late spring early summer for a contractor/construction worker, etc. not very warm, but like typical carhart, they will wear like an anvil.

Someone makes a kit to smooth the bolt rails inside the reciever. Different lubes could be helpful but, getting finer and finer grit polishing compounds and using the right tools will be more beneficial in the long run.

ALL Rugers will slick up considerably with use. Also gotta know where to lube that bolt. And grease works best on Ruger bolts. One reason Ruger bolts feel rougher than some others is the bolt rides on the magazine follower. Drop the floorplate and work the bolt you'll see how much less drag there is. A tiny smear of grease on the leading edge of the follower will improve things greatly. My Rugers were all rough when I got them but now are as smooth as anything else I own including Rem 700's and Sakos.
