Pocket holster recommendations for a J frame S&W?

I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who uses these. I liked the Galco PH 158, but they are out of stock until the first of the year.

I like the Kramer pocket holster for the J-frame. I have been using one since 1997, and I use it every day. Expensive, but worth every penny. Keeps the revolver in one orientation and breaks up the outline of the revolver on the external pocket side. Dillon Precision sells these for less than Kramer Leather does due to a quantity discount.

I bought a Uncle Mikes pocket holster last week. I know it was less than $10. I like it so far. I use it with my S&W 340pd.

If you are not hung up on having a leather holster the Desantis "Nemesis" is an excellant choice at about $15. I have one for my S&W AirLite 360PD and one for my Kahr MK9. The holster sticks like fly paper even in a baggy pocket and the draw is as smooth as silk.

Farscott is correct. The Kramer is the best and I have most all of the holsters for the J frame. I'm 5'9"/185lbs. Body shape makes a difference as does the wardrobe.

I'll second the choice of the Desantis Nemesis. Keeps my 442 right where I want it and the holster will not come out when you draw.

I carry my Charters Arms Undercover in an Uncle Mike's holster and it has worked well for me. Nice thing about most of these is that you can try one and not lose a lot of money if it doesn't work well for you.

I have been using Uncle Mike's pocket holsters for years now and find them 100% satisfactory. I've had to replace them a couple of times, but they are not expensive. If you buy this one, make sure you get the one that is specifically sized for the J-frame, though.

The Alessi Pocket PRO from Lou Alessi. He hasn't done many as I don't believe that the holster is cataloged. I prefer it with the OTMG 'improvements', rounded bottom, pocket catcher, and a bit smaller front to back, but that is up to you. It is the thinest pocket holster that I have seen, short of a 1 gal milk jug cut up with some duct tape to hold it together.

Another vote for the Kramer. I have both a right and a left. After eight years of constant carry it is still in great shape.

A question for the guys who use Kramers; Doesn't the molded shape of the holster print thru?

I have a couple of Ahern Enterprises pocket holsters, one for the Kel-Tec P32/P3-AT, and one for J-frame snubbies (which also fits the Taurus snubbies OK). I've been pretty satisfied with them.

Another for Uncle Mike's. $10 or less. THe holster will usually stay in your pocket when you pull the gun out.

On the Kramer pocket holster, the molded side is on the inner (toward the body) side of the pocket. The other side of the holster is a piece of plastic that is not molded to the shape of the gun. If anything prints, it looks like a wallet or cell phone.

I use a very simple and cheap neoprene No. 3 from Uncle Mike's.

I have a leather holster very similar to the Kramer. It was a gift, so I have no idea who makes it. It has a large leather square on the "outside" which really does a great job of disguising the revolver. The only problem is that it extends so high that I can not grip the revolver without having to partially unholster it. This is difficult to do since the leather exterior is a little too smooth to be stable in my pocket, I usually end up with the holster pulling out with the pistol. I almost suspect it is actually a right handed holster (I'm a lefty and it sits in my left front pocket) designed to have the square piece against your thigh to make it more comfortable. You can then use your thumb to push the pistol out of the holster, something you can't do with the left hand, as the square side rests against the fingers, not the thumb. I'm going wrap the holster with some thick rubber bands (ranger bands, actually) to see if it gives it enough stick to let me unholster the pistol without pulling the holster out of the pocket.
Bottom line, not all pocket holsters are made equal! Try first!

Pocket holster for a snubbie. Yet another good reason to get into leather-work. Find a local leather goods shop. Go there and buy some waxed thread, a couple of needles and some thin "kid" leather.
With some research and experimentation, you can build great leather holsters for a few dollars each. Trust me on this one.:)

Well, just ordered a DeSantis "Nemesis." Seems like a tuned-up Uncle Mike's, so the extra $5 or so is OK. We'll see how it performs and report later.

Those Desantis Nemesis holsters look interesting for the price. The Kramer holsters are nice; I won one a few months ago in one of their "find the bullet" contests. I also have a Desantis Milennium holster(owb) that I bought about a year ago for about $25-30, on one of their closeout sales, and it's very comfortable.

For now, I keep using the Uncle Mike's.
I keep planning to buy something higher speed and lower drag, but then I remember: "It's in my pocket; who's it going to impress?" ;) :D

Albert and Tamara,
Do your holsters ride deep enough in your pockets(jeans) to where the butt of the pistol isn't exposed?

the nemisis looks like it doesnt let a snubbie go deep enough into the holster itself. like it has room left in the bottom of the holster...... like it was made for a semi auto and they just stuck a revolver in it also and said it works.
does the nemisis actaully fit a revolver? does it left it sit all the way down in the holster or does it leave it riding high with room left in the bottom of the holster....

Your assessment is pretty much right on. I have a nemesis and it just doesn't work as well as the equivalent product from Uncle Mike's. You hit it right on when you said it didn't seem like it was designed for a revolver. It doesn't seem to be to me either. I like the pocket grabbing material on the outside, but it seems to me that it doesn't hold my 642 to my satisfaction. I think I'll go with the Kramer pocket holster (a very expensive option, but they have the best I've seen so far).

I invite you to take a look at K&D Holsters, www.kdholsters.com. We have two basic styles of leather holsters for j-frames, with or without an anti-print panel. We've made a number of these, especially those with the anti-print panel. If you have something in mind as to style, etc., and don't see it on the website, please feel free to ask. We often do custom style work.
Good luck in your search.

Wanna hear a Nemesis story to make your heart pause? Someone I know well had a S&W J frame in one, wearing pretty deep-pocket khakis. Stood up in a chair at work and caught the thing somehow on the arm of the chair and the gun went *plonk* onto the carpet. Luckily, the only other person around was on the other side of the desk and never saw the revolver swiftly picked up and pocketed.
I can't for the life of me figure out how it happened but it is the gospel truth. I am sure that the observation that revolvers don't go into the Nemesis quite right is part of the problem. The individual in question went back to UMs.

i have a couple of mikas, but if and when i try a different kind, it will be the cheapo uncle mikes, but no way will i try a nemesis for a revolver.
now for a semi auto, theyre almost without equal.

I am sure that the observation that revolvers don't go into the Nemesis quite right is part of the problem. I was very disapointed with mine when I first got it. My 642 was sticking up out of it and there was plenty of room for the barrel to go much deeper. It's almost like these are made for a 3" barrel or something. I cut some of the stitching that was holding the trigger guard and it fits right down in there now.

With a pair of regular jeans, does the butt of the 642 show at all; while bending, squatting, etc.?

Albert and Tamara,
Do your holsters ride deep enough in your pockets(jeans) to where the butt of the pistol isn't exposed?
jrobb
The pockets in my jeans are way too small to hold a J-frame. I use a pocket holster in my vest pocket or coat pocket.
