Performance: how do things look from your end?

As late as this morning we were seeing lingering effects from attacks this weekend. I've tried to fix things. Have I succeeded?

If not, let me know what you're seeing. If it's "speed," for instance, does that mean clicking on a link takes a long time to get a response, or getting the first response takes a while after which it's quick to respond, or that searches aren't as fast as you'd like?

Let's try to keep the discussion in this thread, and hopefully we'll get all lingering issues resolved ASAP.

a bit of a longer delay than normal.... more "broken link" error messages.

Since the weekend, I'm seeing a slowness when initially lauching THR. Navigating around once I'm in isn't too bad. Occassionally, I get a page that is very, very slow to load, so I hit refresh and it seems to load faster at that point. I have to do the same, at times when pics don't fully load. The PM page seems to take an excessively long time to load also.

Just my observations...

My experiences exactly.

OK, tweaking variables. Give it 5 minutes to make sure everything's restarted nicely, then let me know if it seems more responsive.

Initial THR load, and subsequent page loads seem to be 'popping' much quicker now. PM page load is also quite a bit better. The page banner loads instantly, then hangs a bit, before the rest of the page loads up. All-in-all, performance is much better after tweaking the variables.

My problem is the same, slow to initally load then slow within the site. When changing thread it's as if my mouse doesn't work at first.

Very slow to load, especially on bigger forums and threads with many posts. Better today than yesterday, when I gave up on the site altogether.

Very slow, almost as if I'm back on 28k.

OK, that's 2 "very slow" grades, but I'm not seeing it from here.

What's slow? Can you tell me what is/isn't happening?

I don't know how to be anymore clear. All the normal functions of the site are slow, maybe very slow.

Good point.

Things that might be working well, or working slowly, include: How long it takes to load the first page of THR, or loading a page after not interacting with the site for a minute or so.
Pageloads after that initial load
Search speed.
Time to display a whole thread. That's off the top of my head, but there are a few areas where performance is felt, and sometimes we need trade-offs to reach the best overall performance.

This weekend the site felt like it was on dialup, and sometimes wouldn't load at all. Now, all pages load instantly. It seems like everything is back to normal on my end.

Tonite 1140PM:

5 seconds to load the general discussion page
2 minutes+ fpr legal - I gave it up after 120 sec
8 sec for Handgun general
6 sec for Handgun revolver
5 sec for Handgun Autoloader
12 sec for BuySellTrade Handgun
3 sec for Legal, my second try
30 sec for Tech Support.

Looks like if you don't get in in the first 15 seconds, blow out and try again. It just hangsthere, with no modem activity ofter the first attempt at opening.

Wow, Bob. It looks instant from here, all the same tasks.

I'll keep looking.

OK folks, looks like I might have isolated the problem, but it's something my ISP is going to have to fix so it might be morning before they get it.

Thanks for your patience.

During this session on THR it has run as fast as it ever has.

Why is post #16 marked Today, 12:37 AM and post #17 is marked Today, 11:03 AM?

Why is post #16 marked Today, 12:37 AM and post #17 is marked Today, 11:03 AM? Because in the sequence of things it goes like this:

10pm, 11pm, 12am, 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am, 5am, 6am, 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm. Not the way we normally think about it, but the time stamps say that #16 was a bit after midnight, and #17 was an hour before noon.

Why is post #16 marked Today, 12:37 AM and post #17 is marked Today, 11:03 AM?It's not, at least not for me. Post #16 is marked 'Yesterday, 11:37 PM' and Post #17 is marked 'Today, 10:03 AM'.

It was broken from roughly the 5th to sometime on the 11th. Browser symptoms were that the page would start loading, but would take a very long time (over 5-10 seconds, typically) to complete. I never did a full breakdown of how long each page element took to load, and I didn't look at any packet logs to see what was going on, so that's the best description I can offer. If what you wrote above about your isp fixing something is what fixed it, something they were doing to mitigate the original DoS was breaking things very severely and noticeably.

Everything here on DSL is quite snappy. No lag at all. I'm using (and loving) Opera as my browser. Also, looks like my email notifications are back after being turned off for some reason because I had about 150+ of them in my inbox this morning.
