German police batons

I just got one of these things from Sportsman's Guide. Basically a blued steel tube containing two telescoping springs that slide out when you swing it; about 6" closed and 14" extended; no provision for holding it open. Not as effective as my PR-24, but a hell of a lot easier to stick in a back pocket.

Has anyone else tried one of these things? Any opinions?

Ah, the original Toten Slager... (Death beater).
The Germans has used this thing for almost a century now.
Guess they are effective as they were issued to Gestapo and SS.

Is it solid metal, or springy?

Sounds like you might be better off with a collapsible baton.

Be careful with the law; in CA its a felony. :cuss:

Dont let the pic fool you! That is an effective piece of equipment. I watched many of GIs go down and out with that whacked upside their head in Frankfurt Germany. Unlike American law enforcement, hitting on the head is an acceptable practice over there.

That's because we're not a bunch of ex-Nazis. Hitting someone on the head with an impact weapon can VERY easily be lethal. Unless you were fully justified in using lethal force, you will be in a world of hurt.

And are you saying that modern day German PD will not hesitate to hit you on the head with a baton? Or were you referring to wartime practices?

Carrying batons, collapsible or otherwise, is not legal in many states either.

I believe he was probably referring to incidents involving American soldiers stationed in Germany during the Cold War. Today's Germans, like us, can legitimately claim to not be a bunch of ex-Nazis.

Only recently and after many lawsuits have American LE organizations began forbidding impact weapons against the head, same as choke-holds.

Good & bad, I have heard of new police recruits now more concerned with lawsuits than proper employment of baton tactics.

Don't know WA laws, but being caught with one of those is bad 'juju' hereabouts.

Nope, talking circa 1990, 13 years ago. Yes they would whack you in the head in a heartbeat. Maybe today they have training or policies that forbid them from a head strike.

"And are you saying that modern day German PD will not hesitate to hit you on the head with a baton?"

Yes.

The batons are springy, hurt like hell, but don't cause as much blunt trauma as a collapsible baton a la the ASP.

The spring batons are basically useless. Will not do any damage. May cause pain, depending on where the blows land. Probably hurts less than being hit with a belt.
