Hey guys, new here. Been reading THR for quite some time now, but never bothered signing up. I was bored this evening and I decided to photoshop some different colors on the Romanian PSL to see what they might look like. I'm rather partial of the purple myself... I may make a set or two for the hell of it when I obtain a PSL next month. So tell me, which do you like?

Have you looked into the darkish red that the Russians used as their wood finish? I think it's quite nice and would be rather classy. Kind of like that "crimson" you posted but not quite as dark.

No, I haven't seen that!! I agree, it is VERY classy, and the emblem on the side of the foregrip completes it. I wonder if I could find a stain to match that...

Welcome to THR!

I think a medium/dark gray would look nice, the Russian red doesn't look too bad (and would be semi-original), but the colors go too far for me.

I'll add a dark grey to the list.

If you don't get a reply here, try doing a search for "Mosin refinishing" and see if that turns up any reports of efforts. I've seen people talking about using some type of Minwax stain and such to achieve the effect. I've seen some very nice work done on Mosin wood.

Failing that, post a thread entitled "How do I get a 'Russian Red' type finish on wood?" and that should bring people out of the woodwork.

Thank you very much. I'll take that advice. I've got a bit of experience (worked in a woodshop for a while) but I'm not that great at it. I'm sure that ol' plywood probably takes a bit more effort than regular shop pine.

I have heard that the best way to get the "Russian red" is to use shellac flakes and denatured alcohol, never tried it myself. :)

Someone in a refinishing threads had a formula for RIT-dye based 'Russian Red'.

Try a search for that. I will, too, but I can never find what I'm looking for when I actually know what it is.

Ah, I found what you meant about the shellac flakes. They used a bit of RIT dye for color addition as well. As for the RIT based formula, the fella used scarlett red and brown. I can imagine that came out well. Minwax also has many colors close to the ones above, but I bet I could get brighter custom colors from RIT dye if I gave it a shot.

Cherry stain would probably work well with an AK stock set.
