Hi folks, the basic question is, has anyone done any chronograph work or watched for pressure signs when interchanging small pistol and small rifle primers?

Interchanging primers has been hashed and rehashed, over and over again. Try a search.

I did and apparently I resurrected an old thread and it got locked out.

I just can't win.

Happy shooting everyone.

I'll give you one example:

.38 Special, 200 grain Lyman cast 358430, 4.3 grains of Trail Boss, CBC (Magtech Brass), seated to the crimp grove ( I don't have the OAL in front of me), all fired from my S&W 681-3 4" .357 Magnum revolver.

Federal Small Pistol primer: Average velocity 673 fps, 15.24 Standard Deviation

Wolf Small Pistol primer: Average velocity 664 fps, 26.65 Standard Deviation

CCI SP Magnum Primer: Average velocity 700 fps, 23.31 Standard Deviation

Federal Small Rifle Primer: Average velocity 704 fps, 16.95 Standard Deviation

Note that there was not really a significant difference in velocity for all four different primers. The Federal primers had the most consistent results. The rifle primer might be a little hotter, and 4.3 grains of Trail Boss is not a max load, but it appears to me that it is safe to use SR primers in some handgun applications.

Note, I went with Federal SR because rifle primers have harder cups than pistol primers. Federal primers are still the softest though. Several of my handguns have trouble setting off Wolf Small Rifle primers in the experiments I have done with them.

Suffice it to say there are valid reasons primers are made, and labeled, for different uses.
