Nice! Are you going to bid?

I saw it too! very rare to see one turn up. I almost thought about bidding, but I think I'm going to have to let it pass for now.

That's in my watch list but I don't think I'll bid.....maybe.

Those were made by Palmetto, right?

Yeah and after reading how much trouble the Palmetto replicas give with soft internals and misaligned barrels and whatnot, I can pass on it for now. I long for the day Uberti puts one out.

I had a .31 Colt repro made by Palmetto, imported by F.I.E. and though it was a little rough around the edges (literally) it was a pretty good gun. This Whitney might be worth it for its unique value. There isn't much that can go wrong with these that can't be fixed. It might not be an every day shooter like a Walker or a Ruger, but they don't come up for sale that often. Tempting.

I too will pass, tho it is tempting. Don't see the steel frame version show that often. Thought I would post it in case anyone might be interested.

I threw in a low bid and got beat right out of the git-go.
I have one of these fine shooters, and don't mind having two.
This one looks a tad on the rough side, like maybe it was a kit revolver or something?
Mine does not have the visible machining marks etc.
I know rumors about low quality etc are passed around on the forums, but mine clocks well and is tight. The fit and finish are equal to a modern Pietta too. Mine tends to shoot a tad to the left tho-.
It's just like anything else, quality varies, and some people are pickier than others. YMMV.

SHIPCHIEF, do you have any pics of the Whitney cylinder? I'd like to see the top of one, looking down at the nipples.

finish looks terrible. Sand or grind marks and bluing is just bad. Man i would still probably get it. except i like to eat and my wife would not be tooooo tooo happy not too sure i want to sleep on the couch. i know i would strip it completly then hone the whole gun down smooth out the whole finish then reblue or maybe do a custom blackish brownish color again

No hurry. I just wanted to compare it to these (Spiller & Burr and Whitney)

scrat, let me know if your bidding and I'll stop. I thought it would go with my Spiller and Burr.

I like the way the Made In Italy on the barrel is slanted and not even with the barrel. :barf:

Yep, Palmetto definately had quality issues. When Dixie did have it on their website, it did not get good reviews at all. :mad:

The Doc is out now. :cool:

That is pretty lame isn't it. If I end up with it, that well all disappear. Looks like it needs wood too, lot of grip metal showing. As long as the bore is serviceable I can fix it:)

Pohill;
My 1860 Eli Whitney 36 replica cylinder looks like your sample on the left.

That would be the Spiller & Burr repro. The one on the right is an original Whitney cylinder. I was hoping that I could find a replacement cylinder for the Whitney.
Thanks.

Pohill;
I did take some pics, but I had to replace the operating system in my computer recently, and all my files were moved in the process. I have to 'relearn' my computer and myself so I can post pics.
The idea that replica Spiller & Burr parts can be used... I would like that.
I see the Whitney 1860 listed on Gunbroker sold for a substantial price. I think it has potential for it looks like it was never finished in the first place.
Maybe the buyer is lurking here and will come out in the open to tell us about it and his plans for it.
I think they are a fine piece, and worth having even if some extra effort is involved.

I have this original Whitney, and I shoot it, but I worry about ruining the cylinder, so if a repro Whitney cylinder fit, that'd be great. But it doesn't look like it will.

One bidder wanted it more than I did. Lot of money for a revolver in need of a complete restoration.

$211 is way over what I would pay for that gun. Personally, I wouldn't have gone over $150.

$100 would have been nice;)
It's only value was it is seldom seen. Fully restored it may be worth $300 +/-. It would have been a fun project and matched my S&B.
