Anybody heard of this company (http://www.kukriplanet.com/)?

Seems to do most of his business on ebay.

Any experience?

I'm curious, because I've become interested in Kukris,
and this is the first business that I've found that
seems to offer a bunch of them.

Did you search THR at all for "Kukri" ?

Let me help you: "Kukri"@THR.org - Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=kukri+nalioth+site%3Athehighroad.org&aq=f&oq=&aqi=)

As a matter of fact, yes.

I've got several threads on kukris bookmarked.

But I also did a search on "Kukri planet" and "kukriplanet.com" and got no results.

Hence, this thread about that company.

Any other questions?

Well, usually Ebay + "previously unknown" company = trouble.

There are plenty of good and recommended folks selling quality Kukris out there.

Nem,

Never heard of them. They offer kuks from several different sources and their "products" actually link to several different ebay sellers instead of "their" sales. Very curious. Considering that Himalayan Imports is the gold standard on kuks and they offer a staggering array of different kuks I'd stay away from KP.

Himalayan Imports is the only kuk company that gets recommended with any consistency.

Hso,

Thanks. That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

I've explored HI's pages numerous times over the years. Have them bookmarked. I have no doubt that their kuks are quality. They definitely have an appeal, and I may wind up with one eventually.

The thing that interested me about kukriplanet is that they seem to be a kukri clearing house, selling a wide array from different makers, including Kabar, all in one place. It's nice to see many different Kukris from many different makers (some obviously crap) displayed together, offering that big picture overview that can be useful in sorting out names and models without having to surf all over the web.

For better or worse, I'm attracted to the Kabar Kukri, in part because a friend of mine owns one and really likes it. (It's actually here at my studio right now; I've intended to try it out, but haven't been able to go camping with it yet).

Not as traditional as an HI, admittedly, and may even be lesser quality. But I like its feel, and especially like the grip.

Nem,

I suggest you try your buddy's KaBar kuk out before purchasing. I think the blade is only 1.8" thick and might be prone to getting stuck when chopping. KaBar will have made it as good a piece as they can, but it may be more machete than kuk chopping machine.

OTOH, for $40 you can't hardly go wrong.

Thnx, Hso.

I've had some other concerns about the Kabar, too: blade seems very broad (deep) relative to most Kuks.

Do you have a fav kuk or two that you'd recommend me looking at?

I'm actually seeking a good camp tool that I can carry backpacking, something to complement my fixed blade camp knife (SOG seal pup elite), something I can clear a camp site with in old growth, maybe cut down saplings (1 - 3") for use for shelters, fire wood, etc.

Lightweight and about the same length as that Kabar, good steel. Don't mind spending the bucks for quality.

Oh, forgot to mention: I also like the Kabar because it's black, less sparkly in the moonlight. Not sure why I favor that, but I do.

For your use, a wwii style kukri will serve very well. I've played with my own wwii style one, as well as an Ang Kola of similar size (but VERY much heavier), and a couple other no-name type Kuks.... The standard wwii styles offer a nice balance of power and weight, and I've had no difficulty with durability.

I can reliably fell up to almost 2" alders with a single well-placed blow. Takes some practice, but they're quite effective tools.

I have several HI Khuks myself and recommend them heartily. They chop like there's no tomorrow.
Now, I've read good things about this company too, so they might be worth a gander:

If you look, some of the models that Kukuri Planet is selling are Khukuri House knives.

Lots of ebay sellers are buying and selling Khukuri House knives. I have a number, they are totally functional and cheap.

I have had issues with a couple when the buttcaps came loose. The handles were held in with natural glues, made from tree sap. Not as good as epoxy. I poured in modern two part epoxy glue and reattached the buttcap, and nothing has come loose.

One of the good things about buying from a US importer, is that you get a break on shipping.

The absolute best for fit and finish are HI. Edge quality is the same, as all of these knives are made from scrap car leaf springs, heated by eye, and quenched with water from a tea pot.
