7.62x39 at 20-50 yards on hogs

I am going hunting in December with my dad (he will have a Saiga 308), and will be using my new to me pre-bloodied at 278 yards by Krochus Ar-15, and I am wondering the best way to do the shooting. I was told it would get about 2 MOA with bulk steel core, so in my hands at 20 yards I would say 1.5", but I haven't shot it yet. I have some choices, and i am just wondering how much of a difference the bullet choices will make. I am trying to decide between softpoint and hollowpoint. We will be on a feeder, so I can be picky about my shot. I also plan on getting a good bit of lead down range the week before the hunt with it. My question is this.
At 20-50 yards, where should I be shooting, and what should I be using? Neck, CNS, or shoulder, and SP or HP?
Also, is there any reason to buy brass cased ammo if the steel stuff I have shoots MOPig vitals?

At that range, headshot without a doubt. We are overrun with hogs out here west down I-20 near Strawn. I have taken multiple with my Norinco SKS and AR-15. All headshots no run and trail DRT.

Softpoint only!
Neck shot (head is nearly always moving on hogs).
Check to see where your point of impact is at those short distances (20-50 yds.)
Good luck to you.

you can get a Hog with a gut shot with a core-lokt soft point bullet.

shooting a hog in the head is not as easy as it sounds... even if you hit the head... it is a matter of hitting the head in the correct spot... the actual target on the head is quite small.

I've always used a heart/lung shot on hog, even with my 7.62x39s, but that's more of a function of ingrained practice. It's hard to remember to alter your POA when confronted with hogs at contact distance. ;)
The Sierra 125gr bullet is the stoutest of the available options, and will give a pass-thru shot on most any hog shy of 500lbs. You won't get a solid blood trail on the bigger pigs, but it'll do the job.

Given what you will be using I voted Shoulder/Vitals and Softpoint. always a S/P over a H/P on hogs IMO. I would even prefer a FMJ over a hollow point, but then, that's just me. I personally prefer to head shoot, and don't find it very difficult from a good rest with an accurate rifle. But if you're bouncing through a wheat field in a pick-up, with a spotlight, nothing beats the boilerworks. So there's no good reason it shouldn't work for you.

Head/shoulder/vitals with a soft point bullet. Penetration kills.

154 Wolf soft point, cheap, effective as any .30-30. Shoulder/vitals best bet. Head is a small target for a POS SKS. If you're shooting something with some accuracy, maybe, but even at 50 yards, I'll shoot for the shoulder with one of my SKSs. They'll die no problem.

I'm glad you like your new upper shaman. Right now I have no expertise shooting Hogs so I won't comment on that. But with reguards to steel cased ammo I do feel like I should add that you need to shoot some before hunting to see how your lower and particularly the hammer spring handles the harder Russin primers.
As I mentioned when selling you this upper some brands like Barnual/Monarch were 100% good to go, some like the 154grn wolf would misfire maybe 5% of the time and the the wolf military classic stuff wouldn't shoot but maybe 2 in 10. But again this was on MY lower and trigger group. yours may behave diffrently.
If you don't have a chance to do this before hunting I would just buy a box of Remington or Winchester SP's with it's nice soft American primers. This ammo while a bit weaker than the Ruskie fodder is more than up to the task of putting Porky Pig on the ground in short order

I have shot a many number of feral pigs when I was use to live in S. Texas. I have either used .270 or a muzzleloader. I have always shot behind the ear. They always fall on ths spot. I have yet to track them into the brush.

Krochus, it will get probably 50-100 through it before I take it out shooting if I have the chance. I am hunting for magazines right now, and your's might go back to c-products to get replaced if I can find other magazines.

I was always curious about using my SKS to hunt hogs, all the ones I've shot have been with 00 Buck. The land with quite a thud :)
