I use Remington 150 gr. One other choice... 180 gr. Not a whole lot to choose from unless you hand-load.
Enjoy that .........99. :)

thats all there is out there (in any sort of large quantity that is), I haven't picked up the rifle just yet (wanted to see ammo availability first). I want a 99 but it sounds like I may be better off holding out until I find a 308 version.
what do you guys think?

For deer hunting, the 150's work quite well. What do you have in mind to do with this rifle?

When the 308 and 243 were introduced for the 99 the materials and heat treat were changed making the newer guns stronger. I would recommend you wait to find a 308.

I own both a .300 and a .308. There is really no advantage to the .308 save that ammo can be found at Wally World. Improved metallurgy is kind of a moot point since it sounds like the OP isn't going to be handloading any barnburner cartridges. The 99's action is plenty strong, they have no reputation for blowing up.
If being able to buy ammo at a department store or gas station is important, then hold out for the .308.

I'm going to be using it for hunting, ammo availability would be nice but at the same time as long as I can atleast stock up a fair quantity of a particular loading I intend to use there isn't much issue.

Depending on your game Georgia arms has several very good choice. Check out there site , call and see if any thing is loaded. If deer is your game ,get the Nosler Ballistic Tips. Win, rem, fed all load the same rounds that did work decades ago and will still work with good shot place too. Stay with a 150 grain not the 180 for deer.. GA might load a 125gr NBT .

Get a hold of freakshow manufacturing. He has the tooling for that caliber already and can custom load with your choice of projectile and velocity. They don't list custom loading on their site but they will do it if you ask.
