ust picked up my P-83 Wanad pistol. I was thinking of calling this review the "ugly duckling of the 9x18s", but after a bit more time I'm not so sure that's true.

The pistol is seems even more utilitarian in design than either the Mak PM or its predecessor the P-64. But it has a number of features that are growing on me very quickly.

I ordered one hand select with a spare mag. I am very happy with this pistol so far. It is in unissued condition, 98%-99% (the slide is 100%, the frame has a tiny mark or two on the trigger guard). The PW Import billboard is large, but at least it is nice and straight :) and crisply dot-matrix printed. Over all, the finish on the P-83 is not as glossy as the P-64 or Mak PM. The two mags were unissued.

The DA trigger pull is a bit rougher/grittier) than a Mak (Bulgie, EG or Russian) and I'd loosely compare it to my CZ-75 when I first bought it. Not bad though, especially if it smooths out with a bit of use. The SA trigger pull has a bit of pre-travel. No over travel on SA or DA. Some might find the spur hammer to be an improvement.

The grips are pretty nicely designed. They are plastic covering the backstrap, and more rounded than the Mak giving a gentler/more ergonomic feel in the hand.

The safety/decocker (push up to decock) is nicely located. The mag release (euro style) is an easy push, and the mag releases itself with a healthy amount of spring.

I'm hoping to get out to the range before Thanksgiving, and will post a range report.

Sorry for the quality of the pics.

That is an excellent pistol. The Poles make some pretty nice weapons.

I looked at those but it was hard to tell how the stamped slide and frame looked in the pictures J&G had. Obviously the Poles liked it better than the P64 which is milled so I'm sure it was a good design.

I had one, but the trigger was less refined than the Makarov. It was an interesting and well made gun, but I sold it to a collector, as it did not fit any need to replace my Makarov, Colt Hammerless, or PPK for light gun carry.

I will say that I often carry my P64. The P83's hammer looks like it would snag on clothes if you tried to draw it.

I have a soft spot for pistols from the mother country.

Dubya stands for Wojtowicz.

I hope to get a Radom too some day.

Ditto here on a soft spot for Polish pistols. This P-83 rounds out my collection, so far that I can tell (until they begin importing the Wist-94 or MAG-95/08 pistols).

- Radom ViS wz.35
- TT-33 (two)
- P-64
- P-83

I wish that the 9mm MAK PDW/machine pistol counted as a curio & relic. Or that they made a semi- for export only.
