Another Rem 870 question

I've been thinking about replacing a barrel that has some rust on it (from a relative not storing it properly) with a 3" chambered barrel. This is for a Wingmaster 12 gauge and as I understand, I'd need to verify that I have a magnum receiver. How can I determine if I have a magnum receiver?
Thanks.

The serial number will end with the letter M.

A 3" chambered barrel will fit on a gun with a 2 3/4" chamber, but will most likely give trouble with extraction on 3" shells. Short of waterfowling, I've never had the need for a 3" shell.

Just curious, why replace the barrel?
Some rust is no problem, just gently rub it off with some 0000 steel wool and oil.

If there's a lot of rust that can't be rubbed off without taking off the finish then it might be good to look into sending it to a gunsmith to clean it up and reblue.
That aught to be cheaper than a new Wingmaster barrel.

I've been thinking about picking up an extra barrel for my 870, wanted to try and find someone who had a spare 28 inch with the rem choke and a vent rib, don't really care if its a 2 3/4 or 3 incher. Spare barrals can't be a bad idea :)

I have more than one 870. I did the steel wool and oil thing and it looks a lot better. So I'll keep it, but I'd like to get an 18 1/5" for SD.
