I'm not much of a shotgunner, so forgive the noob question.

I've got a Mossberg 600 (nearly the same as a 500) with a 26" c-lect-choke barrel. It's kinda useless for me and I was considering shortening the barrel to 18.5" and installing a pistol grip to make a home defense gun on the cheap. The shortening procedure is well documented here and I'm quite confident I can do a good job. Besides, accuracy and aesthetics are of little concern for this application.

The question is: With the choke removed, can I shoot slugs in this barrel? I plan on using buckshot at home, but the local range only allows slugs, and I do think it's important that I get comfortable firing it before I decide it's right for h/d.

YES, you can shoot rifled slugs.
They often do better with no choke then with choke.
Factory slug barrels are cyl bore.

NO, you don't want to remove the stock and put a pistol grip on it.
They are for Mall Ninja's, action movies, & video games.

In the real world, a stock makes it possible to hit what you shoot at, controls recoil, and makes fast follow-up shots possible.
A stock also is a great aid in muzzle control and gun retention if the bad guy gets hold of the barrel.

You might try looking around and see if you can swap barrels with someone. You might get a short barrel with the sights already on it, rather than having to put a new bead or sights on the chopped barrel...or you could sell your barrel and buy a short one somewhere.

One thing I've learned is that there's often a better deal than chopping a good barrel.
