Muzzleloading Shotgun?

Hello my friends.

I've been having an itch for a muzzleloading shotgun but for the life of me I can not find one of a realtively inexpensive price.

What I'm looking for is either a 20ga. or 12ga. single barrel "doubble barrel is nice but I'm trying to keep cost down due to the times right now" & Dixie Gun Works has a few one single Mortimer but that's out of my price range & so far all the sights that I look at seem to have only doubble Barrel models in the $700.00+ range, even the kit is $650.00+.

My price cap right now is $450.00 so do any of y-all know of a place that may have any for sale roughly in this price range even if it is a kit "that would be fun to build," my intrest is mostly a hunting shotgun for Turkey & Grouse & since I've been really on a BP kick for some years now I want to complement my safe with a shotgun.

Thank Y-all

Pedersoli makes a nice one,and every now or than it dips below $800.00 in Dixie's flyers, but in your price range,I'd go with any good hammer gun,say a single barrel break open NEF,and some brass Magtech shells. BP for cheap!

maybe a shotgun barrel to fit a BP rifle. they used to make shotgun barrels that fit T/C renagades and hawkins'. that should cost much less that a whole new gun

Voodoochile, I think the best bets in your price range would be pawn shops and estate sales.

As azyogi said, you might consider putting a smoothbore barrel on an existing rifle.

Try these folks for barrels:

I think it safe to say that all old ML shotguns have Damascus or built up barrels. Even with BP, I consider them dangerous and not for firing. Modern reproduction guns, of course, have much stronger steel barrels.

I've thought of a Smooth bore barrel for my Lyman Trade Rifle it'd be the best of both worlds for me.
I've looked at Green Mountain but so far I've yet to find one.

It's not; here's 3 that don't. All purchased at auctions over the last 25 years; one is a CVA kit.

This Navy Arms was built by Pietta in 1984:

Pedersoli, made in 1976:

and finally, a CVA, built in 1983 by me:

BHP FAN he stated he was looking in the Dixie catalog so I am guessing new is OK.

T/C used to make a couple of SGs. One was a 56 bore that looked like the Renegade rifle and the second was a New Englander that I think was a 12 guage.

I like to read "The Backwoodsman" magazine and smooth bores are talked up quite a bit there. wwwnorthstarwest.com is an advertiser there and several writers have mentioned the guns. They have a whole slew of guages available.

I have tried to find an abused 50 that I can bore out the barrel and have a small shotgun that should be able to give good groups witth a patched ball. The proper "Beater Gun" just hasn't turned up at a pawnshop yet.

I have a T/C New Englander 12 Ga. I bought a 54 cal barrel for it, and that's what I've been wringing out first.
After I get a satisfactory load worked up for the 54, I'll drop in the 12 ga barrel and have the wife throw some skeet with that orange plastic thrower thing.
A New Englander 12 ga w/ cylinder bore is not expensive, and still comes up on gunbrok3r, and in parts on fleabay from time to time.

I found a ML SXS 12ga made in India with stamping on the barrel stating max load 90grs FFg+ 1 1/4oz shot. It is not a fancy piece but functional, blued, and looks close enough like the old ML guns. It had a steel ramrod but was easy to make a fiberglass one for it. I got it for $150-$175 if I remember. There was no way I was going to spend over $600 for something I just wanted to shoot occasionally.

Ardesa Fowler Shotgun, single barrel. I don't know if anyone distributing it in the states. It is normally 25-30% cheaper than the cheapest Pedersoli double.

I agree with Iskra, assurance that Traditions sells you, show you the web of the factory in order that you see her and the photos of the equal one with which there hunts a friend of mine (it(he,she) him(her) is OK)

I saw this one for sale on the Traditional Muzzleloading Forum classifieds. If I had the cash, it wouldn't still be there!

CVA optima elites have BP shotgun barrels for them. A combo should run you about 400. If you already have an OE, the barrel will probably run you about 200.

I have a CVA 12 SXS and out of all BP guns. Shotgun is the most fun. I still use my center fire 12 sxs. I shoot clays at a club. We have diffarent games we play. The BP ones are the best and a real kick. You will have a blast.
