Marlin tube fed problem

I have an old bolt action Marlin model 80 in 22LR that is tube fed and my problem is when I cycle the bolt the piece of metal that brings another round up goes up to far and lets the bullets in the tube just start going into the stock underneath the receiver. I have already tried to bend the spring back a little but I'm afraid to bend it to much and break it. Has anybody else had this problem, what's a good cure for it.

The cartridge lifter should not be able to come up that far. Something is broken or bent, but I can't tell what without seeing the gun.
