Tonight, starting at around 6:30 p.m., a dragon will try to eat the moon...
If he's not stopped, the moon will be eaten, and the entire earth will be changed.
And, if we don't stop him here and now, in a few months his brother will try to eat the sun...
There's a full lunar eclipse occurring this evening starting at 6:32 p.m., with totality around 8 p.m.
Just having a little mythological fun. ;)
In fact, here's a very fascinating thread about eclipse mythology and practices to make the dragon spit the moon or sun back out...

And with that said...

Eclipses are so cool.
I saw a show once on TLC where they conducted an interview of contestants. One of the questions they asked was "What weapon would you use to kill a dragon?" The point was to guage how imaginative the person was. It seems there's some pretty imaginative people on this board.

Mark-That's a Javelin.
This is a Dragon. And with a range of only 1000m, it'll fall a bit short of the moon-eating dragon.

...my buddy said he watched a show where they took a 8' log, drilled a hole lengthwise, and launched tennis balls using black powder. So...with a dragon...
1) "log gun"
2) potato gun
3 )pumpkin gun
dunno what is supposed to kill a dragon, but substitute the "ammo" accordingly.
Wait I know...use the "Power of Cheese" To lure Dragon away from moon.:p

During the Siege of Vicksburg, the Union forces didn't have mortars so they impressed logs. They burned out the center and reinforced the exterior with iron bands. For close range, low charges it worked to make life miserable for the Confederates.
Some Confederates did the same at either Cold Harbor or Petersburg and used them to "flush" out Union skirmishers. The Confederate model didn't have iron bands to reinforce them though.
Now, back around 1779 or so (I may be year or so off), during the Siege of Boonesboro, the Shawnee under Black Fish tried to improvise an artillery piece by burning it out and reinforcing the outside with chains. It blew up instead.
You see, we have a history of wooden guns in this country.
Kids. Don't try this at home.:scrutiny:

That show was on last night; called "Myth Busters."
Good show.
They proved that you could make a wooden cannon.
They blew it up in the end...
By dropping 5 POUNDS of blackpowder down the muzzle and hammering in an aluminum plug.
FUN!

Wow. Didn't know it was on TV. Read about it in Grant's Memoirs and there's a drawing in Battles & Leaders.

Mike, that was the show . Buddy said it blew and "toothpicks" went everywhere.
So we launch cheese at the dragon...get the dragon in range and use a Dragon to slay a Dragon...

Gary,
They were actually referencing a story that occurred in the 1500s or 1600s in Czechoslovakia, where one town was feuding with another.

town feud over a pretty girl or something insignificant like pooping upstream of the other town?
From U.S. Grant's Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, vol. 1, p 540:
There were no mortars with the besiegers, except what the navy had in front of the city; but wooden ones were made by taking logs of the toughest wood that could be found, boring them out for six or twelve pound shells and binding them with strong iron bands. These answered as coehorns, and shells were successfully thrown from them into the trenches of the enemy.
An illustration is given in Vol. III, page 522 of Battles & Leaders. The same quote accompanies the drawing.
From a book (which I'll decline to identify) written by a Confederate: "Some fellows in the second pit on my right thought up a plan to flush the Yanks out of their pits and give us a shot at them. They made a mortar by burning out the end of a log; using the process common in the South to make a mortar to hull rice. The batteries gave them some shells, cannon powder and fuse. When ready, word passed along the line to 'Stand to your guns and look out while we flush 'em.' Then they fired off the mortar. The shell did not go very high, but sailed along over the rifle pits of the Yanks as if it was looking for a good place to land. Every pit that it passed over turned out two men who thought theirs was the selected target. And in the excitement we got in some telling shots."

Mike:
You must have done some good shooting last night. By 10 p.m. (CST) the dragon was gone and the moon shone in all its beauty.
