Hi,

I recently inherited a S&W 38 special CTG handgun and was wondering about the history. It's been in the family for quite a while, the serial # on the butt is 126399 and I'd like to know what model and how old it is, also if it's safe to fire with todays' ammo. The guns in great shape but it's probably pretty old.

Thanks,
Mike

See this sticky about that.

As you can see, we need more info to I.D. it positively.

BTW: CTG is the abbreviation for Cartridge. As in S&W .38 Special cartridge.
It has nothing to do with the model of the gun.
Only what cartridge it is chambered for.

Sorry, here's the rest;

a) caliber - 38special
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle) - 6"
c) grips shape (round or square) - Round
d) number of shots/cylinder bores - 6shot
e) type of sights - fixed
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip - 126399 at bottom of grip and inside cylinder assy.
g) Model number - None found.

Thanks.

Well, it sounds like a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 2nd. Change.
Made between 1906 and 1909.

The modern version is the S&W Model 10 M&P.

It would be safe with .38 Spc standard pressure lead bullet loads, or 148 grain wad-cutter target ammo.

I would not shoot .38 Spl +P jacketed bullet ammo in it.
