I am going to the gun show tomorrow. I am looking for an inexpensive
rifle in .308 0r 30-06. No special purpose, I just want one.
What should I look for?

the Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow is not very expensive, about $400 or so. Sorry I keep plugging Winchester, but it's what I researched prior to purchase, and I'm super happy w/ mine.

Why not a mauser?

I have a Yugo M48A that shoots 3 inches at 100 yards with the crappy standard sights. With a good scope or peep sights, I could bring that down an inch or two.

Besides that, the 8x57 is an excellent round. Same power levels as the .30-06. Surplus ammo is wonderfully cheap and if you reload, you can put together premium hunting ammo inexpensively.

rem 700 adl is the route i'd opt if i were in a similiar situation.

for a semi auto .308 check out a FAL or a russian VEPR

neither are "cheap"
