Ponchos

What's the latest and greatest poncho? I hope someone can point me to a place to start. I'm considering the good 'ole GI issue one, but I'd like to know what's out there. I saw a thread a while back that had a link to someone who made ponchos that could be combined for a small shelter, and I think they made stuff that the military buys, too, but I can't seem to find the thread.
Oh, if someone want to educate me on the GI issue poncho, I'd be more than happy to listen. Thanks!!

Get yourself a set of the goretex type surplus rain gear(coat and bibs), you'll be a lot happier and dryer. :) Ponchos work ok for a tarp or shelter, but how do you set it up in the pouring rain without taking it off and getting wet? :)

Amen. No more ponchos for me, EVER.
A Helly Hanson rain suit is far more specialized, weighs less etc.
ONE exception:
Black powder hunting its nigh impossible to "keep your powder dry" without a poncho to park under.
If HH made a poncho I'd buy one.

I used my GI poncho as a rain jacket for a couple of years until I could afford to buy a Gore-Tex parka. It did occur to me that it would be pretty interesting to try and set up my hooch during a rainstorm with just one poncho. So until I got the Gore-Tex, I had two ponchos.
