plastic build up.

If your bore and choke are smooth and in good condition, how much shooting does it take to have plastic build up affect choke/patterns?

And for when it starts to happen how well does CLP/Breakfree work on plastic build up? I would think not so well as it doesnt affect plastic bits on guns. If it doesnt work what is recommended, and will it harm things like the plastic safety, trigger guards or camo coatings on the gun?

Thanks.

Any good petroleum-based product, even WD-40, will work to get plastic build-up out. Depending on the volume and the quality of the shells being used, the intervals can vary greatly. I use aerosol brake cleaner, let it sit for a minute or two, then use a brush on a rod in a cordless drill - takes the gunk right out of the barrel and the choke. More importantly is to clean the threads on the choke tube and inside the barrel

I found "Goo Gone" a citrus based product sold for removing adhesive works quite well for shotgun plastic residue.

Hi Slabuda,
I am not the concern person who can solve out your question. In fact I would like to do it for you as I have solved many queries so far related to different field. I will contact one of my friend who is in army. At the moment he is outside the country however we remain connected on the net. I will ask him for your question and he has something to reply, I will revert back.
Thanks.

Brake cleaner and a 'tornado' brush is what I use to get the plastic out, but it will make a mess of paint and some plastics.

Having a chrome plated bore reduces plastic buildup. The tornado brush does very well removing it but clean often as it's much harder when there's lots of buildup.

Shooters choice bore cleaner is great for removeing plastic fouling from shotguns. It is used by many trap and skeet shooters .

Ditto on the Shooter's Choice. Was recommended to me years ago by some pretty high powered trap shooters. You know, the Vandalia types with 98/100 lifetime averages. :what: Works great for me.

Break Free CLp works great on plastic build up. I have found that shooting trap makes the plastic build up as bad as anything else I do. My reasoning is that the barrel gets hotter with 25 shots over just a few minutes. The hot barrel tends to make the plastic worse, or that is my interpretation od what is happening. Rarely do I shoot as many shots that close together even dove hunting.

My procedure for cleaning the plastic is to simply spray CLP in the barrel and wait overnight. The next day the plastic has turned loose and a great deal of it is curled up laying in the barrel already before I run a bore snake or brush through the barrel.

I found that cleaning the barrel of plastic without the overnight wait makes for much more work and scrubbing. I used to insist on cleaning everything right away, but age and experience has taught me a little patience.

One thing I have sure noticed...the chrome lined barrels in my son's Spartan O/U sure make it easier to clean the plastic as well.

carb cleaner, with tornado brush , then regular brush with plenty oil to seal barrel, do not miss last step or it will take forever to "shoot" barrel back in. learned this trick competition shooting turkey shooys

scchokedaddy - explain that last part with the oil.

Thanks guys. It was just a curious question about how much shooting. I have been hunting the last month for ducks/pheasant and decided to give it a clean. Wasnt too dirty (the chrome bore of the Beretta Extrema doesnt get too dirty and its easy to clean) it was more of a weatherproof/rust avoidance thing. Beretta markets it as very weather proof but on ounce of prevention......

I used powder blast and CLP sprayed down the barrel and a few passes of a bore brush. I also have shooters choice that I use on all my other guns, I really like the stuff. I also used shooters choice grease and FP-10 oil. Glad to hear the CLP and shooters choice both work well on plastic build up.

I found that if I used oil to finish this job, the weapon would come back "in" with 3 or 4 fouling shots. The first time I did this it took about a box of shells before it came back. All my competition guns have very long forcing cones. My one outlaw type 40 inch custom gun does not. forcing cone work was done by Charlie Boswell at comp n choke (hope its allright to say this,am not advertising) and it realy helped. Have not shot any in several years now.Another trick I used was a slow drill for this stsge. Just got lazy and tried it and it worked. Only necessary about every thousand rounds with normal cleaning. Usualy about every every weekend we would shoot from 100 to 500 rouinds a weekend. Between severe cleaning all I used was brush and Hoppes #9 and a good quality light oil (WAHLS CLIPPER OIL or similar). Wiped bore with mop several times a night. JUST REMEMBER AFTER YOU CLEAN WEAPON BEFORE YOU SHOOT A MATCH YOU NEED TO PATTERN GUN AGAIN!!!!!! This will keep you from losing and getting upset. Some times it will only take a couple of shots sometimes it will t=ake more. But if you dont take last step with oil, you will definetly be dissapointede. Was told you have to "reseaL" BARREL BECAUSE THE SOLVENT STRIPS INSIDE CLEAN. Do not exactley understand this, but it works. God bless and good luck

Acetone and a patch wrapped around an old bore brush will remove plastic fast. I get mine at Ace Hardware, its cheap. Don't get it on the wood finish.
