I JUST got a 6.5 Rem Mag in a remmy 673 w/22" bbl and waiting for it to arrive. That said, do any of you have some recipes for it?

Congratulations on your purchase, that's a sassy cartridge that is overlooked most times. It runs close to the 6.5-06 for performance.
Here's a site that has a few loads to check out.

nice starting point! How bad will longer bullets like the 140gr be in the new actions compared to the old 600s that had issues with heavier bullets? Was it the bbl length or seating depth and powder amount? With my longer barrel, doesn't it stand to reason i can use the heavier stuff and not be hindered like the old days?

I believe that the original 600 magnum was a short action and the magazines were the limiting factor and required the bullets seated deep to function. I'm not sure about the 673 and it's action. It may have the same problem. If your going to reload, don't overlook the 129-130gr bullets.

I had a 600 magnum in 350 Remag back in the day. I also had a 350 mag and a 6.5 mag in model 700's at different times. I did a bunch of trading in the 70's.

I have had a 6.5 rem mag for awhile now but it is a rebarrel of a 300 win mag. I used a Douglas #4 contour 1 in 8 barrel and it is 26" long. The action was a Browning BBR with a detachable magazine that was way too short to load out on the 300 win mag but let's me load those long 6.5 bullets out where they don't cut into the case capacity

So my reloading data may not be much good to you. I get 3000 to 3100 out of 140 gr bullets and 3100 fps + out of the 130 gr. Right now my rifle really loves the 130 gr Scirrocco II's

Questions:

1. What is the longest bullet you can load and still fit the magazine?

2. What is the size of your combustion chamber? IOW, what is the length of a bullet seated to touch the lands?

Nice setup woods, you can tap the potential of the round seating the bullets out in the longer action.
I load my 6.5x55 for a full length VZ24 98 Mauser and seat my bullets out as needed. I try to maintain .020 off the lands.

Tommy, if you're limited to a 2.800" COAL due to your action length, then you'd probably be better off using a slightly faster powder than R22 - the powder woods had such good results with. I'm thinking H4831 or N560 would be ideal. This is because your shorter cartridge has a slightly smaller powder space (the deeply seated bullet eats up a bunch). In any given cartridge, when the expansion ratio increases, a slightly faster powder will often give better results.

The 673 is a rework of the Model 7. It is limited to 2.83" overall seating length.
Yes, you'll have the seating depth, and powder capacity issues with your new 6.5 but don't let it bother you.....

I had the opportunity to get a .350mag in one before the shop went out of business. I really wanted a 6.5 but have never seen one. (would have liked the .350 but already have a custom .338/06 so considered it redundant, but then again, I have two .257Robts. and a .257wby, and two .30/06 B/A, -one left handed, so that excuse dosen't really wash....)

I have a Rem Mod7 in 7mm-08 that I originally intended to rebarrel to 6.5-284 or just rechamber .284win. Made mistake of shooting and chronographing it first. It's now my favorite rifle/cart. (2,900fps w/140gr bullets)

Bottom line: With newer powders such as H4350, RL22, IMR4007, and RL17, and IMR7828 (especially with the "short-cut versions) you have some wonderful options for maximizing the 6.5rem-mag.
John Barsness ran some excellent articles debunking the myth of "limited" powder capacity on the very similar .257Roberts and .300WinMag regarding bullet seating depth vs. powder capacity limitation, and short necks.

I've got both a Custom M98 Mauser in .257Robt. with the so-called 3" chamber and throat. And, a Ruger M77MkII with the SAAMI "Remington" short throat. Although the Ruger barrel isn't quite as accurate as the E.R.Shaw barrel on the Mauser, it gets equal or higher velocities with slightly lower powder charges and seated to SAAMI lengths (I.E. 2.775-2.825" lengths, the latter the seating depth for Berger 115gr VLD slightly off the lands where it gives "it's" best accuracy- under MOA for an otherwise 1.5-2MOA rifle).

Example- max load of 45.0gr of IMR4831 w/115-120gr bullets.
Mauser- @ 3.015" oal; gives ~2,800fps
Ruger- @ 2.800-2.825" (bullet dependant); gives 2,975-3,050fps! or .25/06 velocities. (of course at .25/06 pressures too)
I see similar trends with IMR3031, both H and Imr4350, H4831, and RL22.

Someday I may run across a Mod673 in 6.5 and I'll probably buy it on the spot.
Good luck and report back!

Thanks for the responses guys, and i really would like to get the max potential from this setup. I will do what i can with seating depths, case gages, etc and try to keep you informed. I'm excited because i feel it has great potential and will use H4831SC to start with. The links to the reloaders nest is excellent, NCSmitty! Thanks!
