My eyes are getting older, and I don't want to go to Dad's scoped Renegad for hunting yet.

I am considering trying the T/C peep sight on my T/C Hawken rifle, and wondered if any of you have experience hunting with one of these. Also, how does it do with the stock front sight?

I have hunted with peep sights on a Garand and M1 Carbine when I was much younger and those firearms were more affordable than sporing rifles, but those peeps were battle sights and didn't obstruct much view.

The T/C peep sights look more like a target sight and like it might be a bit too much of an obstruction in hunting situations.

Some folks remove the peep for hunting and use the threaded peep housing as a ghost ring sight.

To each his own BUT:
Years ago I installed a vernier tang sight on my T/C Hawkin with of course the appropriate globe front sight.
Accuracy was phenominal!
I found however that the front/rear combo was a poor sighting device in the hunting woods especially in the poor light conditions of early morning/late evening situations.

That is what I was worried about. On 11/10 I killed an 8 pointer with my Hawken, about 5 or 10 minutes before sunrise. I was struggling to see the open sights in that light, and was worried that the tang mounted sights would give that problem.

looks interesting and workable. I presume that sight is mounted forward of the lock, as a normal open sight is.

Has anyone experience with this one?

Yes;
I'm 54 now, and always had great 'night vision' when younger.
I have a T/C hunting peep sight on my White Mountain Carbine.
I also just got the older style T/C mid range ladder peep sight. I have not hunted with them yet, but I have noticed that they are limited in low light.
I plan to have both notch and peep sights for my Renegade, and lower the one I'm not wanting to use.

I have a tang peep on my .50 TC and pleased with it and it goes with the rifle. I have a couple of the Williams receiver sights also, they are very nice units, easy to adjust and very well made.

I can no longer see the patridge type sights that come stock on the TC traditional guns. Long ago I put a Lyman M57 sight on my .54 Renegade and it has served me well (some modification to the stock was required) but seeing the top of the post front sight has become increasingly hard. In low light the sight disk can be removed to provide a "ghost ring" rear giving ample but close range sight picture. I have a TC tang sight (not a ladder) on my H&A .50 that does the same for that gun. HTH

I believe there are two apeture sizes for the old T/C ladder sight.
I have the smaller.

You should look at the pictures and info. on the manufacturer's product page. There's a different model number depending on whether the TC Hawken is a .54 or not, or for the 1" Renegade. That's mentioned in the model selection window near the bottom of the page.
Apparently they come with 2 apertures.
