Question for your comments, please -

I'm shopping for shotguns, am an Ithaca 37 fan (have two), but have found a S&W 12 ga 3" 26" model 1012 at a decent price. Trying to catch up on facts and opinions about this gun, I ask - how does it compare with the Rem 1100 and other auto-loaders?

New or old?

Can't speak to the autos. A friend of mine and I bought identical S&W 916-A pump guns in the 80s. Satin nickel, rifle sights, 8 or 9 capacity. I loved mine. His stock broke after a minor fall, and his gun developed some kind of recurring malfunction that caused him to lose complete confidence in it. Mine worked flawlessly until the day I (stupidly) sold it.

I'd hesitate to recommend one, unless it comes with a warranty..... And I've not been pleased with S&W's warranty program on a pistol, but that's a story for another day.

The item I was considering is a model 1000 (1012) SA. The volume of new or used S&W shotguns on the market as compared to Remington, Mossberg and even Ithaca and others is pretty small which led me to do some research.

The Model 1000 was a good shotgun. There was also a Deluxe version, but I don't remember what they called it at the moment. The Model 916 had lots of faults.

The model 1000 was made by HOWA in Japan and is similar to the Remington 1100. These were well made guns. There have been posts elsewhere regarding keeping them clean and the piston shock absorbers deforming due to age/use.

The main downside on these guns is they are no longer made and so there is a lack of spare parts, etc.

I hunt with an older model 1000 3 inch magnum, its a good dependable shotgun. But as Grandmaster B said, you have to keep it clean.

Have had both.S7W jammed EVERYTIME I shot it.Mod 37-FLAWLESS!

My humble suggestion would be try to find a used WInchester Model 12. Absolutely fantastic pieces of machinery. Hand fitted machined steel and smooth as glass.

They are very nice shooting upland hunting guns. Lighter than an 1100. Mossberg made an updated version in the 90's. The gas system needs to be kept clean and check the gas rings. I think they have fixed chokes and do not interchange between 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells.
