I have a T/C Contender in .223 Rem ... love it. I saw tho just other day a Contender bbl in .44 mag, on GunBroker ... a 12" blued and thought ......... ''gotta have''!!

Have not got this yet but hopefully it'll be on the way soon .... I am wondering .... any particular aspects I need to pay attention to when I do a barrel change over??? Or is it as simple as I'd like to think???

It's as simple as you'd like to think. Forends sometimes need to be changed, though, depending on barrel length changes. Not a problem either, just an added expense.

Good point Stevie .... however, the .223 bbl is 14" and is about 6" over the forend so ... seems like that'll be no prob. Thx. Am all but assuming this'll be a breeze but ... just fishin .. in case!!:)

If they are both bull barrels then you'll only need one fore-end.

I always carried a stubby screwdriver that fit the fore-end screw and a small plastic mallet to help tap out/in the hinge pin.

That Contender will also take some wrist bone crushing loads in 44 mag also:evil: :evil: The 10" light barrels in 44 are pretty nasty even with factory loads, but that 12" if a heavy contour will tame it a lot.

Work into the boomer loads though, with the high bore axis on the Contenders it takes some getting used to or it will smack you around. Remember, never try to hold a Contender down in recoil, let it jump, you are only there for guidance and not control......

I have shot a 44 mag 10" Contender that was sub 3" at 100 yards with 300 grain XTP with a silly powerful load. BRUTAL recoil, terrible blast and a big fireball but it just stacked the bullets.

I had a T/C in the past......., .22 Hornet and .22lr Match Grade barrel. And as already posted.....the only thing you may have to change is the forend due to different barrel lenghts/configurations.

My advice is to avoid used barrels, unless they are Bullberry's or TC custom shop, I have gotten a couple of bad barrels in the past. How bad? My 629 with iron sights could out-shoot one scoped .44 Contender at 50 yards!

I have a Contender with a 14" .223 barrel. Also have a 14" bull barrel in .45-70. Barrel changes are a snap.

You'll like that 12" .44 barrel! I have one from SSK...love it.

Although, yeah....it doesn't neccesarily kick harder than my Redhawk with the same load (23 gr H110, 240 bullet) but it kicks....more! Puts on a good show for bystanders. Just let the recoil ride... :evil:

Now you guys got me thinking of getting a G2 Contender.

I used to have a stainless 10" Contender (original series) in 44 Mag. Talk about a nice shooting handgun! That thing was super accurate and worked great on deer. Speer 200 Grain JHPs over a max load of Win 296 worked very well for me.

I've got an Encore now but I think I'll leave it in Muzzle loader configuration and just get a shotgun barrel for it as well. That will give me an excuse to get a G2 Contender.:D

A small question tho to you T/C dudes ... I am thinking, I am loathe to lose my settings on the scope for the .223 .... which shoots VERY well.

Any thoughts? Is it work logging the corrections I apply for .44 mag, so I can re adjust to that later? Seems only way to me.

If it were mine I'd just play with it for a while with iron sights.
Then later on get it it's OWN scope.

I know it's an extra expense but you'll be happier in the long run.

I agree with BluesBear.

Originally I planned on transferring the scope between barrels.
In practise, I always felt that I needed to verify zero settings of different barrels and calibers.

Discovered it's much handier and reliable to have a dedicated sight for each barrel.

I have a TC with the 14 inch bbl and a 3X scope. The Pachmayer rubber grips helped mine. My hand would be bruised after 50 rounds with the wooden grips. Mine likes the 265 gr FP handloads with H110 or W296 best and will usually place them in 1.5 to 2 inches at 100yds.

I agree, separate scopes for different calibers. High quality scopes only with the heavy-kickers. I have a Leupold on my .30-30. Never scoped the .45-70. Don't know if one exists that will stand that kind of punishment. Maybe Burris. It's what sits atop my Redhawk, and I've shot some heavy loads out of it........
