I am looking for the best all around scope for in the $400 range. I currently have a Pentax that is horrible.
1. It will be on a Mossberg 100 atr .270. (mostly 130g ammo)
2. I could get by with a 3x9 but i would prefer 3x10 or higher.
3. I am pretty good about not dinging my rifle up, so running with it through the woods will not be a huge issue.
4. My longest shot would probably be in the 250-300 yard range.
5. Hopefully I will be able to put this scope on a higher caliber gun one day.
6. I am new to hunting and have only been shooting a few years now.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

My answer would be the same had your question limited the cost to under $200.00; Nikon prostaf 3X9X40 w. BDC Reticle. I have several Leupold's over $400.00, and they have glass that is no better, and frankly not quite as sharp as the $169.00 Nikon. I am a convert---

What about one that has a higher max power? I do like the Nikon though. I looked through one at Dicks and it was nice.

Burris FullField II 4.5-14x40 or Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 line of scopes.

If you had said "under $250", the answer would have been and is, the Nikon Omega 3-9x40.
Going up to 'under $400', these are *arguably* slightly better than the Omega:
Bushnell Elite 4200, 2.5-10x40mm
Sightron SII Big Sky 3-9x42mm
Sightron SII (not the Big Sky) 3.5-10x42mm
The SII Big Sky 3.5-10x42 can be found for around $450, not too far out of your planned price range.

All this is my own (informed) opinion, of course.

I really like the Bushnell Elite 3200 scopes! Just sold my 10x40, in favor of a 5-15x40 with AO and target turrets. List price is $380, but can be found for right around $300

Find yourself a used Leupold VXIII. I bought less than high grade scopes for years until I figured out that even if you only have one scope and you move it from rifle to rifle it is a major joy to have a first class piece of glass. You won't regret spending as much for glass as you paid for your rifle and you may sell the rifle but you will keep the scope!
