I had my 500 out in the rain this week and when I got home I figured some oil was in order. I removed the barrel and magazine for a good cleaning and oiling. As for the receiver, I just sprayed some Rem Oil in there.
Q: How often should I tear down the receiver and how complicated is it to do?

It's a pretty simple matter to field strip a 500, and no more detailed disassembly than that should be necessary for normal maintenance. See http://www.mossberg.com/content.asp?ID=520&section=service for the owners manual.

FYI, WD-40 is not a great lube but it is terrific for Water Displacement.

Because it is so easy to strip the receiver on the M-500a I go ahead and at least disassemble and inspect it every time I clean. At most it takes me 5 minutes to tear it down and throw it back together.

I used to never pull the trigger group out, just pull the barrel, clean, lube what I could. Bear in mind, this gun is used almost exclusively in salt marsh environments hunting ducks.

I put the gun up one year and pulled it out the next for the first hunt of the season, first duck flies in, the gun won't fire. The trigger sear was rusted together.. I put about 50 lbs on the trigger and it broke. I missed that duck, of course. I pulled the trigger group out when I got home and gave that thing a thorough clean and oiling. I pull it down a couple times a season now and once at the end, last hunt.
