well went to the deer lease fri afternoon.
pull out my .308 go to my stand remove the scope
coveronly to find the rear mount loose! so i make my
evening hunt with my open sites only. then having only
a .44 carbine as backup and wanting to hunt my long stand
(150 yrd. shot range) i decide to drive home and change guns.
next morning i wakeup feeling sick so i sleep in. at 11:00 sat. went back to the lease with my 300wsm i'm in the stand less than 45 min. when a doe sticks her head out of the brush. when i click off the safty she jumps into the shooting lane facing me. i aimed at the center of her chest but me were both nervious and one of us jerked, the 180 gr. hit the left frount shoulder and hooked back out the left side ribs about 8" back. left lung left shoulder and 4 ribs shreaded. she ran about 35 yards and collapised only waited about 3 min. before following and she was dead when i got there.
it worked but way to much gun at 90 yrds. got to get my .308 sited back in before next week.

Thanks for the report. How's WSM recoil versus .300 Win Mag?

never shot a reg. .300 mag. but the win mod. 70 black shadow i have has a lot less recoil than my 45-70 marlin guide gun, and very little more than my rem. mod. 600 in .308 and about the same as my .30-06 mauser. the .308 has a 18.5" bbl,. the -06 a 22" bbl., & .300 wsm 22".

Okay, I have an 1895G, as well, so that gives me an idea.
Thanks!

I'm surprised that any .300 is too much gun. Maybe not a tough enough bullet? What sort of bullets were/are you using?

The reason the Good Lord put a white spot on a deer's neck is to give you an aiming point!

Al, it sounds like the bullet hit a bone in the shoulder, and then you have the mix of bullet and bone hitting ribs--and that will indeed make a noticeable "mess". :)

True. :) Dosen't seem like a "over gunned" problem to me though. With a 180 grain bullet, the difference between the .300 and a .308 is what, 400 fps?

i've been thrilled w/ my 300 wsm, and so far the on-game performance is as good as it gets.

recoil in mine feels like my 7 rem mag, only the wsm shoots 20 grains more bullet at 50 f/s more velocity... think that says more about stock fit than anything...

AND IT DEFINATLY HIT SHOULDER BONE.

I've had some problems with Power Point bullets. They seem to be too soft. You may have had the bullet deflect due to that softness. Shoulder shots are my favorites, so I was sort of surprised at the results. :)
