question about capacities

hey guys, I've been looking at the Mav 88 w/ 20in bbl and 8 shot cap, and the Win. defender 18in bbl 8 shot cap. My question is...
on both guns, the mag tube goes out to the end of the barrels. The win. has 18in bbl/18in tube, and the Mav. has 20in bbl/20in tube, But they both have the same capacity (7+1). How is this?? I'd think that the Mav would hold at least 2 more rds in the tube Is there something I'm missing here?
Thanks guys

20" minus 18" = 2".
One shotgun shell is over 2 1/4" long before it is fired. So you are talking one shell difference at most.
But, the 20" barrel with a flush mag extension must use a longer mag tube spring to get the same force on the last couple of rounds and feed reliably.
And the longer spring when compressed is, ehh, still longer.
And takes up more room in the tube.

Yeah, it's just the minor differences in the tube/spring design. The Mossberg 590 20" barrels have 9 shot capacity, for example.

Nope, you can fit 8 shells in the 590's tube.
+1 means 9.

Exactly. If you'll read, the OP has been counting the +1 in capacity (as in 8-shot cap mentioned twice in the first sentence--both only hold 7 in the magazine)
And zhyla rolls with it. Hell, Mossberg advertises/specs them like that, with a small print "*capacity includes round in chamber"

Yeah didn't want to confuse the issue. The 20" barrel versions of the Maverick, Mossberg 500, and Mossberg 590 come in these respective capacities: 7+1, 7+1, 8+1.

Oh, sorry; I was confused since he'd been talking about magazine tube variations.

Here's something to really muddy the waters...I can get 8 total rounds (7 in the tube) in my 870 with the factory extension using Hornady TAP. They are just a little bit shorter than most others. Try it in your gun and see if that last one won't click in.
