Well guys I sold my 870 to finance another gun, and I miss my HD pump. I'm looking at getting a NEF Pardner Protector, since it's basically an 870. Also considering the Maverick 88 with the 18.5" barrel, just for something different and it holds one more shot in the magazine. God forbid I need one more shot (or any) in a HD situation, but I'm really interested in the comparisons between the two.... or does this boil down to a Mossberg vs. Remington debate haha. If it does, I apologize in advance, and it's something I want to avoid.

It'll boil down to a Mossberg vs. Chinese Army debate for most. The NEF is made by Norinco and that's enough reason not to buy it for many.

I own a maverick 88 security (20" barrel/7+1 capacity). I paid $200 a few years ago and couldn't be happier with it. Its rugged, reliable, accurate and inexpensive...what more could you ask for in a HD shotgun.

My father-in-law bought is girl friend a NEF youth 20ga shotgun w/ 21" barrel and rifle sights for her HD shotty. She is NOT and gun person but she loves going out to the range with us to shoot her shotgun.

Either one will get the job done if push comes to shove.

H&R single shots are made in America. Their pumps and semis are chinese imports. Mavericks are made in the USA. I have a maverick and like it. I like the fact that Mossy stuff bolts up to it for the most part.
Remington has purchased them, mainly because they got Marlin, who owned H&R. Hopefully they won't ruin the firearms of these two fine companies. They have a tendency to do that.

Mavericks are assembled in the US but manufactured in Mexico from a Mossberg design.

From what I understand. Remington was going to sue H&R for their knock off 870, then dropped it because they bought H&R. I've had a few H&R pumps in the shop for repair and can say that 870 parts will work with some minor fitting. It seems the 870 shell latches are a tad wider. I do like the tang safety on the H&R. I'll still take the MAV 88

Id go with the Maverick. I buddies NEF had a busted extractor after the first box of shells. But again, im one of those guys who lets a single bad incident overweight a lot of good. But that said I am a big Mossberg fan so......

I'd go with the Maverick because of Mossberg's customer service and the fact the barrels can be switched. Everything else's fairly equal to be honest.

Thanks guys, while I have been a Remington guy for awhile, I think I'll give the Mav a shot. Action should smooth out over time, and like you said, interchangeable barrels if I ever need them (have a Stoeger Uplander for hunting. I am not a shotgun snob :-p.)

Having owned both shotguns I would go for the pardner. Mine was super reliable never had a problem. And everything but the barrel is interchangeable with a Remington 870. The mosseberg was alright just not near as reliable.

tang safety on the H&R

Sorry, but the H&R Pardner Pump has a crossbolt safety behind the trigger in the same position as the Remington 870. It's made in China by the same company that makes the Hawk 981 and 982 shotguns.

They seem perfectly solid to me, check back in 40 years or so and I can let you know if they're as good as an 870.

I don't have and have never had a Maverick (yet, I'm still lookin' for a steal on one to experiment with). I do have Mossberg 500s.

Either one should give you good service, it just depends on personal preference. The shooter is more important than the shotgun, all else being equal.

In going for a drive with a buddy (he was picking up a Pistol) to a gun shop, I spotted an old ex Police Mossberg, 18" real expensive ($87.00) bit of rust, rubbed off with an old piece of towel, and a squirt of Break Free, works like glass.

Use it for work, real slick, feels good on a sling at 0-dark 30 on a big old truck parking area.

I have the 870 Express Magnum and the Pardner Pump.
Both are wearing black synthetic furniture.
I like the features that come standard on the Pardner that do not come on an 870 Express Magnum.

Here's a few:

5+1 standard on the Pardner, 4+1 standard on the 870.

Pardner is already drilled and tapped for scope. The 870, not so much.

Pardner is sling ready, my 870, not so much.

Metal trigger guard on the Pardner, plastic on the 870 Express.

The receiver on the Pardner is a bit thicker than my 870. Both are made of steel, which in my book, rules.

There's more, I just can't pull'em up outta the quagmire that is my memory at this time.:o

Oh, and also, having said all that, I'll be getting a Maverick too eventually. I'm a fool for great, low price, pump shotguns.:D

I have the Partner Protector and the short barrel Maverick and they are both perfectly good HD shotguns. I like the PP a bit better as it seems to work just a bit smoother, but I've never had a problem with either. I also have a Charles Daly Field Tactical, which seems to be an 870 clone made in Turkey. I like it as much as the PP and it isn't made in China if that is a problem for you.

So what did you have fail on your Mossberg that made it not near as reliable?

Do you have any pictures or at least a description of what problems you were having or just a broad statement like "just not near as reliable".

I have a NEFprotector and it an excellent choice for the money .a bit heavy because the reciever and parts are steel not alloy and the action smooths up nicely with use and a little lube. I did change the butt stock to a pistol grip model which makes it much steadier on target.Except for barrels , if you are into modifiying your gun with aftermarket goodies,if it will fit an 870 it will fit a Pardner.Also if you are useing 2 3/4 shells the pardner will hold 6, five in the mag and 1 in the pipe. I've had it to the range and fed all sorts of ammo thru it from bird shot to buckshot and slugs. It handeled them all flawlessly. Extra barrels can be purchased from nef and need no factory fitting .So you can make it an all purpose shotgun.
