a454me December 10, 2009, 11:15 AM A friend at work gave me a bayonet the other day (we were talking about guns and I told him I had an M1),the only markings I see on it are US and the flaming bomb on the scabbard and the bayonet is marked UC over US with the flaming bomb in the middle of the US .The bayonet is slightly over 14 inches in length ,can anyone provide any more info on this bayonet ?
thanks

Congrats, they fetch around $100 these days!

DrakeGmbH December 11, 2009, 06:09 PM I believe the OP has an M1 Bayonet, not the older M1942 Bayonet. The M1942 is identical to the older M1905 Bayonet issued with the M1903 Springfield rifles - but with plastic grips instead of wood. Many M1's you'll see are cut-down M1942's. These are easy to spot as the fuller runs all the way to the tip - without photos or some more info it's impossible to say if his is a new-made M1 or a cut-down from an M1942 as Utica Cutlery produced both lengths.
My M1 Bayonet measures 14 3/8" overall and was made by Union Fork & Hoe.
My M1905 Bayonet measures 20 11/16" overall. It's stamped RIA but it's a reproduction.
Regardless, that was quite a deal - free is always the best price and WWII US military gear continues to increase in value.
highorder December 11, 2009, 06:19 PM Indeed Drake.
I didn't want to speculate too much without photos. It may be a cut down bayonet.
I have an M1 American Fork & Hoe model. I have been looking for a correct scabbard for some time as it came with a Danish model. It looks fine, but there's something to be said for correctness.

DrakeGmbH December 11, 2009, 06:26 PM Interesting, I wasn't aware the Danes made their own scabbards for our loaners. Makes me wonder if the Greeks did as well.
My UFH came with a nice scabbard but barely any finish left on the throat. No cracks in the body at least.
highorder December 11, 2009, 06:38 PM Here's some. As you can see, they are not as spendy as USGI models.

Looks like the Danes made M1 pattern bayonets for themselves in the 50's:

rondog December 12, 2009, 12:38 AM Good score! Sure can't beat the price!

That's indeed an as-made M1 Bayonet and not a shortened M1942 Bayonet.
Sunray December 12, 2009, 02:12 AM "...got mine for $5 out of a gun shop bargain bin..." Recently? A 10" M10 scabbard runs $27.95 from Gunparts. Suspect it's a reproduction.

No this was five or six years ago, I didn't even have a Garand at the time but I knew it was worth buying it anyway. I guess the shop didn't realize Garand bayonets were worth something. They had a bunch on Mauser bayonets as well for a few bucks a piece and I bought them all. I'm a big fan of bayonets, I definitely have way more bayonets than I have rifles for.

Yeah most of the ones I can find online appear to be reproductions.
