Anyone own/use one of the recoil-reducing versions? What kind of recoil suppression do they have?

Got 2 one on my 12 and one on my wifes 20. Love them. They work well enough on a shoulder that needs surgery to stop me from crying :(

I don't like 'em. Can't get a good cheek weld on the thing.

For anyone who wants one, the non-recoiling version is on closeout at Remington for $49.00- http://www.remingtoncountrystore.com/PartsProductCompact.aspx?catalogid=1&categoryid=3586&productid=3905&topcat=1038 .

My concern is trying to reduce the recoil on an 870 for someone who is a little recoil-conscious. Good check weld is probably not a huge issue.

I guess being accurate isn't a huge issue, because you know, you don't have to point a shotgun anyway, right? :D

A good recoil pad and low-recoil rounds are probably a better option. The stocks reduce recoil a bit, but at the expense of what matters more.

Come on now, with all the time I have spent telling people why this isn't true, along with the fact that I am first and foremost a duck hunter, that's a below-the-belt shot;)

To be more specific, my mother got an 870 with a 20.5" barrel. I shoot basically the same gun with a vent rib and 28" barrel. I don't think it kicks bad with 2 oz turkey loads. This self-defense version kicks like a mule with even light bird shot loads. I had no idea the difference in weight would make that big of a difference.

As far as the cheek weld thing; I have an AK with a folding stock that allows no real cheek weld and I can shoot that accurately. Accuracy is relative and all guns are compromises.

Forgot to mention; the length of pull is too long as well. I wasn't there for the purchase of the shotgun or I would have caught this.

Another option, why not the Compstock, which is a more traditional styling? Does anyone own it and have an opinion for him?
I am also (eventually) considering it because I prefer a traditional stock.

the compstock is a possibility but he wants less LOP as well. I don't think the Knoxx Specops is a terrible option by any means. It is however expensive and has its drawbacks as stated. It isn't that bad.

My honest recommendation is a Hogue youth/reduced LOP conventional style stock with a nice fleshy Limbsaver recoil pad and some reduced recoil ammo. If you can make the gun heavier to where she can still hold and shoot it, that'll help as well. Metal vs. plastic trigger guard would bump up the weight, mesa tactical aluminum shell holder loaded with shells would add some...but we're going off on a tangent and mentioning things that are probably WAY above and beyond what she wants. extending the mag tube would help add some weight. just thrpwing out ideas here. haha

on a limited budget, given your stated purpose...I'd have to concede the Specops is probably your best bet, but I still don't think she'll like it. It makes a difference, but not a HUGE one.

I love my SpecOps and I have solved the cheek-weld problem.

ETA: Here are videos (http://video.google.com/videosearch?client=safari&rls=en&q=mad+ogre+shotgun&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=s8QdS_nEBYGQNt-9_ZUK&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CBoQqwQwAw#q=mad+ogre+tac+shotgun&view=2&emb=0&client=safari&qvid=mad+ogre+shotgun&vid=8361016470363412485) of me using the SpecOps all through the Crusader Shotgun Course. I'm the guy in the tactical bandana.

I had one on my Win 1300 I liked it, with low recoil buck or slugs it seemed like a pistol caliber carbine to me.

I never had problem with check weld unless right elbow was supported that tended to give to much slap against cheek. Off hand or left elbow supported was fine.

I traded it towards one of two 12 gauge 11-87 that I have now.

If recoil is concern you can also try 11-87 in 12 gauge or even better IMO for home defense the 20 gauge 11-87.

Got my girlfriend one of the 20 gauge youth 11-87 and wish I would have tried that before I got the 12's. It is noticeably lighter and handier inside than the 12 gauge.
