$300 NRA life membership is back

If you're unaware of this, a search will show it's been done a few times in the past. I think March 09 was the last go around.

Anyway, once in awhile, the NRA offers Life Memberships for $300. I got the offer yesterday ( 12/10/09 ). To make this easy ( on me ), and to not piss off the folks at the NRA, I'm keeping it to 20 people. That's the number they asked it be kept to last time. And I already have 1 spot spoken for. So 19 spots available.

The 1st 19 to post on this thread get the spots. PMs will be answered, but the time stamp on a thread post is what I'm using to determine position.
From the date you post saying you're in, I'll need everything required to arrive at my address in 10 days, or I move down to the next person. Sorry to be a jerk about that. But in the past, there have been some folks I've had to keep asking over & over if they're really on board after they say "yes", and weeks go by and no check or info.

I'd like to wrap it all up ASAP. But the absolute deadline for me to get everything in the mail to the NRA will be Jan 5th.

What I'll need:

Your Name
Address
Check for $300 ( Made out to the NRA...NOT me )
NRA magazine choice: American Rifleman, American Hunter or America's 1st Freedom

The NRA also requests ( but does not require ) an email address & phone number.

Don't post any of this info on the thread. Just post to let me see you're in, and I'll PM with my address & contact info.

It's kind of a bad time of year for the NRA to offer this up. Christmas probably has finances pretty tight. But if you want in, I hope you can make it happen.

Did you get a brown envelope this week with a replacement card? It should have a similar offer for you to sign up people for $300/life. If you did, and you want to sign people up, let us know.

I got the offer too, and once I go through my list of prospects, I'll post back with how many spots I have available.

Sorry...but I can't imagine that's the best you can come up with for not joining especially considering every time this comes up it's repeated over and over that you can stop the junk mail. All you have to do is go on the website or give them a call...you can easily stop most of their mailings regarding solicitations. You will get the stuff pertinent to membership.

I've considered it, but I rather think I will have more influence if I stay a yearly member. I can always use my vote to renew or not as leverage, similar to using my vote to influence poli-critters. Imho, Ymmv, and no offense to the new life members.

The tip below, from the NRA site, worked for me.

I also unsubscribed from email via the link at the bottom of the emails. All I get is American Rifleman magazine (plus a new life membership card the other day).

*****************

Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from
the NRA?

A: Simply email us at membership@nrahq.org or dial
800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not
Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the
amount of mail you receive without affecting important
mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

I still have a few spots left if anyone missed his boat. If anyone wants in on this offer, I have the last spots available and you need to send me a PM right away. A few prospects asked if I had spots and I replied that I did, but just need their info to get them in. Still waiting on 5 packets. Per the guidelines in the OP, I should have received everybody's stuff by 12/22. That was so I could move on to others that wanted in, if it appeared someone that claimed a spot wasn't really serious. But with CoRoMo, Bailey Guns & Yosemite Sam stepping up and taking on new requests, it looks like everybody that wanted in was getting in. So I decided to fudge on the 10 day time limit for receiving checks & info.

However, for personal reasons, I have to wrap this up & have it in the mail 01/05/10 at the latest. So if I don't get your packet by 01/04/10, It won't go, and I'll just be returning it to you.

If they're gonna give away a life membership for less than half what I paid for mine several years ago ($750), then what they should do also is, add as a "retroactive bonus" to membership to all of us who paid the full price, a distinction and status of not having to receive any more dunning letters for more money for the rest of our memberships. It makes sense to dunn them for more money over the years, since they're getting a good deal.

It turns out I can't go back and edit my old post after a few days or so. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm back home from visiting family for the holidays and am able to more quickly respond to PMs as well as check my PO Box (usually daily).

I have 5-7 spots reserved, and currently 1 check received. There's still some time left with my offer. The NRA gave me a January 31 deadline. My goal is to get everything in the mail January 15-16.

If anyone's interested in a $300 Life Membership, PM me with:

Full Name (First, Middle Initial if available, Last)
Full mailing address
Telephone number (Optional)
E-mail address (Optional)
Magazine choice: American Hunter, American Rifleman, America's 1st Freedom
Your current NRA Member Number (if you're already a member so they can match up your records)

Once I receive that information I'll PM you an address where you can send a check or money order for $300 made out to "NRA". I'll then send you another PM when it's been mailed.

I know money is tight this year, so it's not the end of the world. It's likely they will do something like this in the future, but it might be another year before it rolls around.

Edit: Just for the record, none of us (tuckerdog1, Bailey Guns, CoRoMo, or myself) get any commission, bonuses, prizes, rewards, ammunition, or cookies for doing this. We're not official NRA Recruiters through this offer.

Just to confirm for those that went through me for this, everything was mailed today. Had a couple that never did send their stuff, but still wound up with 18 new Life Members...Congratulations to you folks.

A few have had some FAQs. And rather than answer 18 times ( which I just don't have the time to do this month ), I'll try and cover them here.

How long will it take before I get my stuff from the NRA? I wish I knew. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their process. I always mail these as a single packet. So the NRA gets them all at the same time. But in the past, some report getting their membership material in as little as two weeks, and others from the same mailing don't get it for almost three months. But in the end, everybody eventually gets their stuff. I would appreciate it if, when anybody from my group gets their membership material, you post a notice here. That'll kinda serve notice to everybody that the NRA wheels are turning.

Will I get goodies ( a jacket, hat, whatever )? There is no mention in the application of any promo stuff. Nobody in the past has ever reported getting anything special. When I became a Life Member approx 20 yrs ago, I paid full price ( lower than full price today, but more than this $300 ), and all I got was a hat and some window decals. At this price, I doubt there will be much, if anything ( I hope ya get at least a hat though ).

Will I be able to sign up Life Members for $300 once I get my membership? That will depend if you get this flyer. Seems not every life member gets them. Although I'll keep putting this offer up here whenever I get it. If you see it here, and you didn't get the offer, you 'might' be able to have the NRA send you one. There is a dedicated line for Life Members, and I've never had to wait long to get a human on the line.

Anyway, congrats again to all the new Life Members ( as well as those working with CoRoMo, Bailey Guns & Yosemite Sam ).

I've replied to everyone that's sent me a check or money order. The last of my applications went out on Jan 5 except for one which I received yesterday.

Thanks to all who were able to take advantage of this offer. I sent in 20 new applications mostly from THR and a few from websites local to my area. No telling how many people nationwide responded to this offer but I'm betting it was quite a few.

To the new members, stay in touch and let the rest of us know when you're "official" with a quick post here.

I think I was one of the early ones in with Bailey at around December 20th and today (Jan 9th) I received my letter from the NRA.

It was just a basic form letter, almost certificate like, saying I've received a gift membership from Bailey. No mention of membership level and when I log into the NRA it still shows me as Annual expiring at the end of the month but the NRA is notoriously slow at updating anything.

Anyone else get a letter yet? If not look for one about two to three weeks after your paperwork went in.

Thanks to Bailey and everyone that helped out!

Creek Rat,

This happened to some of the folks, but not all, the last time around. I called the NRA about the 'gift membership' thing ( after all, these were not gifts ). Could not get a 'good' answer why some were going out that way, and others not. But in the end, it really made no difference.

Glad to hear some movement is happening.

Joshua, send me a PM and I'll get you in. You'll need to be quick with the payment because we are now at the deadline week.

Send me:

* Full Name
* Full mailing address
* Telephone number
* Email address
* Magazine choice: American Hunter, American rifleman, America's 1st Freedom

I'll then email you an address where you can send a check for $300 made out to "NRA".

Of those who've sent payment and are waiting to see the check clear, please have patients. The process takes time. Especially as we wait for those last few checks to arrive so that we can send it all off to the NRA.

Twenty potential new lifers on the list. I've received most of the payments already. Now I just wait for those last few checks to arrive so I can send this all off together. If I don't receive your check over the next few days, it will likely cost you the opportunity. If I receive the check after I've sent off the packet, I'll have to return it to you.

I'm glad people are signing up, you really can't beat the $300 Life deal they are giving.

I plan on updrading my membership to "Endowment Member" when I get the chance to.

That surprises me. I would think they get advertising dollars based on their subscription numbers. If that count goes down, there advertisers may not pay as much to advertise or advertise at all if the numbers go too low. So by opting out, if enough people do it, the NRA could be hurt.

I would think printing and mailing costs would be lower than advertising revenue, but maybe not. Do they indicate the opt out as saving them money, or just a convenience of not receiving the magazine?

Flyboy ( and all that went through me ), I called the NRA on Friday, just to kind of check for progress. Did a random sample of a few folks that were current annual members. Couldn't check if checks had cleared. But checked their membership status to see if any had been upgraded to Life. Unfortuantely, none had been. But I was told the address on the envelope provided, was to the NRA's mass mailing center. And that they are swamped with incoming mail on a daily basis. Was advised to check back again next Friday for possible progress.

I wonder how much of a cash influx this type of offer brings? If you figure this time around just for this site brought in over approx $17,000 in instant liquid cash - I wonder what nationwide the finally tally on a deal like this is worth. For the people that would normally go year to year at $25 or so I'm sure it all adds up - but all those $300 checks should amount to some substantial coin I would think - good for everyone in the end. Thanks Tuckerdog1 for starting this and letting us all in on the deal. I appreciate it.

CoRoMo- I got a sheet today (just a piece of paper folded in half) saying that I got a gift life membership. It said that more benefits would come later, so maybe a certificate or whatever is on it's way.

Membership is required by my gun club so it'll save me a few bucks in the long run, so the certificates/hats etc don't mean much to me anyway. One less bill to pay was what I was after.

Bumping this thread. It appears none of the 19 people from my group have heard anything back yet. I'll call the NRA today (Friday) during business hours and post in this thread any information.

If any of my group are current NRA members, please check your status at:

www.nramemberservices.org

and post here if it says "Life".

Another thing: Sometimes you'll get your New Member packet in the mail after a month or two and then around 2+ weeks later they'll cash your check, so don't worry that your check hasn't been cashed yet.

Will post again as soon as possible after my phone conversation.

Just got off the phone. They said they've been completely swamped with Life Member upgrades and that "they were told" the backlog was about 3 weeks. I said my packet was sent Priority Mail and received January 28, and she said to give it another week and call back because she has no information at this time.

(I'm guessing it's just a mail backlog so there's no way their computer system could tell anything.)

But really, the information on her screen is the same as what www.nramemberservices.org has, so calling might be a waste of time. I guess people could continue to check that site to see if their status says "Life."

At the end of the call, out of sheer curiosity I asked if she knew the current number of NRA Members and was told 4.3 Million. :D

4.3 million NRA members out of about 310 million, total U.S. population (http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html)...

That works out to just under 1.4 % of the total population, which is a small percentage, but still make up a huge number of members. :D

Yosemite Sam:
she said to give it another week and call back because she has no information at this time....

Hopefully you got a chance to call?

There's no change on my end. If people were sending me money like the NRA is getting, I'd have them checks cashed already....

I don't do a life membership with any organization. I may be happy with what they're doing now, but 5 yrs from now? There are other organizations that are actively working to protect our 2nd amendment rights besides the NRA.

I'll call first thing tomorrow morning and post what they say. I'll try to speak with a supervisor or someone higher up, politely but firmly of course. We know for a fact from the USPS tracking number that the package was delivered to their mail center. We can also assume that they wouldn't throw away a chunk of 19 checks worth $5700. It's probably in a pile somewhere. My goal is to get them to find that pile.

I wish I had more power in this guys! Rest assured that I'll keep them on their toes.

If it's any consolation, they do take 1-2 months sometimes to cash a check. Like if you make a donation to NRA-ILA or NRA Training Department, it does get backlogged.

I understand what you're saying. You never know if an organization is going to change. It does take a leap of faith. The NRA does have a pretty darn good track record, over all. I did a 50% off Life Membership upgrade and decided it'd be cheaper in the long run. Plus I hate staying on top of renewing every year.

Just called. The kind lady said there were only "2 of us" working in the Life Member department (at least in the Mail Center). She asked for the USPS tracking number. Out of curiosity she asked if there was a signature, and I said I only did Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. (Note to everyone in future: If this offer comes up again, go ahead and pay for the Signature.) Said she would track down the envelope and give me a call back.

Diane from NRA just returned my call 2 minutes ago. She had me verify one of the people that I had signed up and said that from the USPS tracking number that the packet was sent to their processing center in Palm Coast, Florida. (Obviously). She said she would talk to a supervisor there and get back to me.

Sam,

Diane is top drawer. She has help me several times. You never get a blow-off from her.

Thanks Sam.

Due to the economy, I can't purchase one. :(

If someone more financially blessed than me would like to sponsor my membership I would be extremely grateful. :D

To all interested members:

There is no ongoing list that we can add your names to.

Those of us who receive the offer to sign up additional members don't know when the next offer will arise. Circumstances change for everyone and although you might be interested now, if the NRA sends out this offer right after you've done all your Christmas shopping, you might have to reconsider it. So please watch for a new thread to be created and get in on it, if you are able at the time.

Also, we do not know that the NRA will ever offer this again at the $300 amount. Therefore, if we were to attempt to maintain a list, you might not be interested if it has changed in cost. Again, please check back when you can, and use the search function to search the keyword "membership" in thread titles.

I believe all 'loose ends' have been tied up now, but if you are still experiencing any issues with your new membership, please contact the member here, whom you dealt with to get in on the offer; either through PMs or email. To all who've joined the NRA for life, we're glad you could get in on this offer, and thank you for helping to protect our 2nd Amendment rights!
