I have an AR in 6.8 SPC. It's a great round for an AR, other than it's relatively expensive to shoot, though I reload to mitigate the expense somewhat. It's more accurate than my 5.56 gun. I build mine around a Bison Armory (http://www.bisonarmory.com/) barrel. He will also build you a complete upper. Another good source is ar15performance.com; I had one of their uppers but sold it to fund a Premier scope (sold this particular upper because it is considered more premium and I could get more $ for it). If you want to hunt with a standard AR-15 (not AR-10), I think it's the round to beat. Check out 68forums.com (http://68forums.com) for more info.

I had a 6.8 and now wish I hadn't sold it if that answers your question. It hit accurately and with authority and shot flat enough to be a 400 yard coyote gun with practice.

I had a 26" encore barrel in 6.8 briefly. I was very underwhelmed by the velocities yielded within published load data.

I now shoot a .30HRT (30SPC) and am quite happy with it's performance bearing in mind that l load this cartridge hell bent for leather

I have a Stag in 6.8mm. 16 inch barrel , 1 in 10 twist, SPECII chamber.
I mounted a fixed A2 stock and a fix 6 power Leupold scope.

I hand load, but have also fired 200 rounds of factory ammo for chronograph testing.

My loads using SSA brass usually give 2,550 fps for a 110 grain bullet, 2,820 fps for a 90grain bullet and 2,250 fps for a 130 grain bullet.

I can achieve groups in the half inch range with some loads and around 1.0 inch with many loads.

I bought mine as a test platform to work up various hand loads. It would be fine for deer size animals if you live in an area without any large predators.

Unfortunately I live in a place where it is a marginal caliber for most game critters.
I will be selling mine, with 500 rounds of loaded ammo and 500 pieces of brass, plus dies.

So, it seems maybe that buying one I should just stick with the .223, as I have either
right now and I'am looking for a little more power in a semi-auto to go along with the bolt
action rifles that I currently own other than my 10/22 which is the only semi-auto rifle that I own, need some input and ideas please, also the 6.8 ammo is damn awful spendy.
about a buck a round, maybe a quality made 7.62x39, who makes a good one of these
as well these days, USA made if possible, thanks much

Robinson Arms has an XCR model in 7.62x39. DPMS also makes an AR style rifle in 7.62x39. Other than that, you may be limited to AK clones, and those are not US made, as far as I know.
A good AR in 5.56x45mm with a 20in barrel and using heavier grain rounds, like the MK 262 Mod. 1 round (77gr OTM) will provide plenty of punch down range, with minimal recoil.

5.56x45 is an optimal round for animals up to and around 200 pounds, give or take. 6.8 does offer somewhat better performance, but If you plan on taking shots on larger animals or at particularly long distances, you should consider moving up to a full power cartridge (aka not an AR15.) You might want to stick with your bolt guns for this stuff, and just get an AR in 5.56 for small game and target practice, they are a lot of fun and ammo isn't too bad. Alternatively, you could get an AR10, which would suit all your hunting needs (a little heavy though).

I've considered an AR in 6.8 SPC, but expense and lack of ammo/reloading supplies is a bit too much right now. .308 would probably be a better route. I've shot a DPMS LR-308, and they are a nice rifle, just a little heavy.

Like Shadow Man said, 77gr SMK loaded at mag length with 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist barrel would be a good 5.56 loading.

I'm actually wondering what the options are when it comes to shopping for a 6.8mm rifle. I really haven't heard of many options other than an AR-15, and I am interested in adding a 6.8 to my selection.

Although, what's most likely going to happen is that I'll get the 6.8 kit for my XCR, and use that as a (very weak) excuse to get another .223 rifle... but still doesn't hurt to know what my other options might be.

:D

In my search for a semi-auto rifle in 6.8spc I've been looking at the XCR, RRA, DPMS and Mini-14. I'd really like the XCR, but would make do with either the RRA, DPMS as a second choice, the Mini-14 being my last choice. I also like the Barrett Rec-7 and LWRC M4A2, but they're way too expensive for me.

Yeah, I'm leaning away from the AR platform, in this caliber at least, just because I already OWN an AR, and have plenty more ARs on my 'to buy' or 'to build' list. I'd like some more variety in my selection, both in calibers and platforms before I have to invest in a second gun safe. :D

To be more precise..

I already own an S&W M&P-15R in 5.45. This AR is going to get split into upper and lower, and the upper put onto an MGI Military Hydra lower with the AK74 magazine well. The lower was originally planned to be used with an AR-57 upper, but I have recently learned that my Christmas presents include a reloading press, so I'm considering a .458 SOCOM upper instead.

Also on my to build list is a basic plan for a 24" .204 Ruger AR, and an 18" 6.5 Grendel piston AR.

And I haven't even gone into the AR-10s yet! That's a lot of ARs already by my standards! :D

I need some variety.
