In October, West Point, Ky., hosted 12,000 visitors for the weekend Knob Creek Gun Range Machine Gun Shoot, billed as the nation's largest, with a separate competition for flame-throwers. Especially coveted is "The Line," where 60 people (waiting list is 10 years long to be admitted) get to fire their machine guns into a field of cars and boats, and during which a shooter might run through $10,000 in ammunition. Among the champions: Samantha Sawyer, 16, the top women's submachine gunner for the last four years. One man interviewed by the Louisville Courier-Journal said he met his wife at a previous Shoot, knowing that "if she could accept flame-throwing as a hobby, she could accept anything." Said another: "This is one of those times when you know this (the U.S.) is the greatest place on Earth." [Courier-Journal, 10-19-03]

Here's a link to the entire article with photos:

Pretty good write up from the Gannett owned Courier Journal. They're not known for being what you would call pro gun, but it was a well balanced report.

and

Samantha Sawyer, 16,

Is this like when people force their kids into gymnastics or ice skating in order to make the Olympic Team before they're 10 years old?

No it isn't. To get that good with a machine gun a person has to put in many hours of trigger time, with passion and desire, to get that good with it.

Thats it, I had enough. I say us Arizona THR'ers get on a jet and attend the next Knob creek shoot.

Im tired of hearing about it and seeing pictures. Gonna make it a point to attend one of these someday.;)

I just know the TN Mafia is going to have to make an apperance at the April show. Fo sho' :D. Heck I think we need to like make a huge THR banner or something and make sure everyone knows to come looking for other THR'ers.

And why cant I find some cutie girl with an affection to machine guns :D

Isnt it some kind of board rule that Skunkabilly gets to make the first pass at any (legal) teenage/early-20s shooter in the news? Or is that just the girls in the news shown with either carbon fiber, or HK in hand?

Dont worry about it, though; it shouldnt take long for her to tell him she doesnt date PRK residents.

I'd also take a guess that I'm much closer to her age than the poor Skunk. ;)

Before the Bingham family sold the Courier-Journal to Gannett it was pretty fair towards responsible gun ownership.

Of course someone should tell that reporter that the "machine gun" from PA in the second photo is actually not, it's a Gatling Gun.

But other than that it was a great article.

See y'all there in April. :D

Hey, I've been telling y'all about this...

This fall, the THR contingent coulda been larger... We had a few folks camping, and a few others met at the range.

It's looking like I may have a trailer/RV for the spring shoot.

We WILL be having a good time.

You have no excuse.

"Thats it, I had enough. I say us Arizona THR'ers get on a jet and attend the next Knob creek shoot". I can't wait to see the airline Security people when the Arizonians try to board the plane with a bunch of machine guns. Quantrill

That would be a thing to see huh.

Whats the status on Hotels in the area? Dont think I would be able to bring camping gear and guns along with clothes on the airplane without paying a huge amount for extra luggage.;)

In the spring, I'll have several tents available, on a first come, first snoozin' basis. There's also the big canopy tent and lawn chairs for the adventurous.

Hotels within a half hour are booked. Figure on at least 45-60 minutes drive time.
